We are seeking an experienced Senior Lumber Buyer to lead strategic sourcing and procurement of lumber and building materials for operations based in the Portland, Oregon market. This role requires deep industry knowledge, strong supplier relationships, and the ability to navigate price volatility and supply chain dynamics while ensuring quality, availability, and cost efficiency.
The ideal candidate brings a proven track record in lumber purchasing, market analysis, and vendor negotiation, along with the leadership skills to influence inventory strategy and support business growth.
- Source, negotiate, and purchase lumber products in alignment with demand forecasts, pricing targets, and quality standards
- Manage and strengthen relationships with mills, wholesalers, and regional/national suppliers
- Monitor lumber markets, pricing trends, tariffs, freight costs, and availability to inform purchasing strategies
- Collaborate closely with sales, operations, and inventory teams to align purchasing with customer demand and production schedules
- Lead contract negotiations, pricing agreements, and volume commitments
- Analyze inventory levels to optimize turns while minimizing stockouts and excess inventory
- Ensure all purchases comply with company policies, sustainability standards, and regulatory requirements
- Resolve supplier performance issues related to pricing, quality, lead time, or delivery
- Provide market insights and recommendations to leadership regarding purchasing strategy and risk mitigation
- Mentor or support junior buyers as needed
- 10 years of experience buying lumber or related building materials
- Strong knowledge of softwood and hardwood markets, grades, species, and applications
- Proven ability to negotiate pricing and long-term supplier agreements
- Experience working with volatile commodity pricing and fluctuating demand
- Proficiency with ERP systems, purchasing software, and Excel-based analysis
- Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills
- Ability to make data-driven decisions in a fast-paced environment
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Forestry, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience)
- Experience sourcing in Pacific Northwest markets
- Familiarity with sustainability sourcing standards and certifications (e.g., FSC, SFI)
- Experience supporting construction, manufacturing, or distribution operations
