Director, Accounting

Job purpose

The mission of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation is to honor the sacrifice of firefighter Stephen Siller who laid down his life to save others on September 11, 2001. We also honor our military and first responders who continue to make the supreme sacrifice of life and limb for our country. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is committed to eradicating homelessness amongst our veterans.

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Accounting Director to join our growing Finance Department and support the accuracy, efficiency, and compliance of our financial operations

Duties and responsibilities

• Oversee monthly close, including journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analysis across multiple programs and cost centers.
• Maintain and monitor the fixed asset ledger, including capitalization, depreciation, disposals, and compliance with internal policies and ASC 360.
• Assist with preparation of GAAP financial statements and supporting schedules.
• Support annual audit, tax filings (Form 990), charity registrations, and regulatory compliance.
• Manage accounting for investments, grants, in-kind contributions, and restricted funds.
• Maintain internal controls over financial reporting and assist with policy development.
• Coordinate with program leadership to ensure accurate functional expense allocations and budget monitoring.
• Supervise Staff Accountants and support their professional growth.
• Contribute to process improvement and system optimization initiatives.

Qualifications

• Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
• 5–7 years relevant experience, ideally including:
• Public accounting (audit, assurance, or nonprofit clients), and/or
• Nonprofit financial reporting under ASC 958
• Strong knowledge of US GAAP and internal control frameworks.
• Proficiency with accounting systems (e.g., Sage preferred) and advanced Excel skills.
• CPA (active license required or in final stages of completion).
• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office/ Google Suite (or equivalent).
• Pre-employment screening, including a background check, is required.
