Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Buyer / Purchaser to join our Purchasing team. This role is ideal for someone with a strong understanding of Asian culture, cuisine, and consumer goods, especially with a background in sushi and traditional Japanese items. The ideal candidate will have experience in international sourcing and purchasing as well as Inventory control & supporting grocery buying operations.
Japanese language a plus,
Key Responsibilities:
- Source, evaluate, and purchase Japanese food products, kitchenware, traditional items, and specialty goods from international and domestic suppliers.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with multiple vendors and manufacturers.
- Conduct product and market research focused on Japanese trends, sushi history, and evolving consumer preferences.
- Translate and review multiple product specifications, labels, and vendor communications.
- Work closely with sales teams to introduce authentic and trending Japanese items.
- Negotiate prices, terms, and contracts with overseas and local suppliers.
- Assist in coordinating international logistics, shipping schedules, and ensure compliance with import regulations.
- Maintain accurate purchasing records and inventory forecasts.
- Serve as a backup buyer for grocery purchasing, ensuring stock levels, vendor communication, and on-time deliveries.
- Collaborate with QA and warehouse teams to resolve product issues, discrepancies, and returns.
- Stay current on industry trends, trade shows, and supplier innovations, particularly in Asian markets.
Qualifications:
- Fluent in English (spoken and written) - Japanese is PLUS
- 3 years of experience in purchasing, preferably in international or food-related procurement.
- Knowledge of Asian food culture, sushi history, and traditional Japanese goods.
- Strong negotiation, communication, and organizational skills.
- Familiarity with import/export regulations, international shipping, and vendor compliance.
- Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); ERP system experience is a plus.
- Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced, multicultural environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with Asian suppliers or within a Asian company.
- Background in food service, hospitality, or grocery retail.
- Knowledge of U.S. food safety regulations and labeling requirements.
