Position Overview
A leading specialty carrier, A is seeking an experienced Underwriting Manager to lead and grow a large‑account construction casualty portfolio. This role is ideal for a senior underwriter or underwriting leader with deep expertise in complex construction risks, loss‑sensitive programs, and multi‑state large‑deductible casualty.
You will drive profitable growth through disciplined underwriting, strategic broker engagement, and leadership of a high‑performing underwriting team. This is a highly visible, market‑facing role for someone with a hunter mentality who thrives on building relationships, winning new business, and shaping underwriting strategy.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Underwriting & Portfolio Leadership
- Lead underwriting strategy for a portfolio of large, complex construction casualty accounts (GL, WC, Auto).
- Underwrite and negotiate loss‑sensitive and large‑deductible programs for commercial GCs, heavy civil, and large trade contractors.
- Evaluate exposure, loss history, financials, operations, and risk controls to determine appropriate pricing and terms.
- Maintain underwriting discipline while driving profitable growth and retention.
- Oversee portfolio performance, identify trends, and implement corrective actions when needed.
Business Development (Hunter Mentality)
- Actively prospect, target, and win new large‑account construction business.
- Build and expand relationships with national and regional brokers across the West Coast and other key markets.
- Serve as a senior market presence, representing the carrier with credibility and technical expertise.
- Develop and execute regional growth strategies in partnership with distribution and product teams.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of underwriters and underwriting associates.
- Foster a culture of accountability, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with actuarial, claims, risk engineering, and senior leadership to ensure alignment on risk selection and portfolio strategy.
- Support product development, underwriting guidelines, and process enhancements.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- 10 years of casualty underwriting experience, with a strong focus on large‑account construction.
- Proven success underwriting complex, multi‑state construction risks and loss‑sensitive programs.
- Bachelor’s degree (required).
- Demonstrated hunter mentality with a track record of winning and retaining profitable business.
- Strong broker relationships and market presence in construction casualty.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and leadership skills.
Preferred
- CPCU, ARM, AU, or other relevant designations.
- Experience managing an underwriting team or mentoring junior underwriters.
- Familiarity with large‑deductible, retro, captive, or manuscripted program structures.
