Controller – Must-Have Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5 years of progressive accounting or finance experience.
- Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial compliance.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience using accounting software.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to present financial information to executive leadership and Boards of Directors.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating across multiple departments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
- CPA designation preferred but not required.
- Leadership or management experience within an accounting or finance department.
- Experience working with Boards of Directors, Finance Committees, or Audit Committees.
- Experience with grants, restricted funding, and contract compliance.
Controller – Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the financial operations of a growing organization. This hybrid leadership role is responsible for financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, internal controls, compliance, and strategic financial planning.
The Controller serves as a trusted advisor to executive leadership by providing accurate financial analysis, maintaining the organization's financial health, and ensuring compliance with all applicable financial regulations. This position also leads the annual budgeting process, oversees the annual audit, supervises accounting staff, and partners with leadership to support organizational growth and long-term financial success.
Controller – Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting and financial operations.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Lead the annual budgeting process.
- Develop financial forecasts and perform variance analysis.
- Monitor organizational cash flow and liquidity.
- Establish, implement, and maintain strong internal controls.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations.
- Coordinate and manage the annual external audit.
- Monitor financial risk and recommend solutions to leadership.
- Support grant reporting, funding proposals, and financial compliance.
- Oversee contract monitoring and financial obligations.
- Manage purchasing processes and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Coordinate insurance renewals and risk management activities.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff.
- Present financial reports to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Collaborate with department leaders to support strategic planning.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Controller – Additional Qualifications
- Experience in nonprofit accounting is highly preferred.
- Strong understanding of budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
- Knowledge of grant accounting and restricted funds is a plus.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
- Strong leadership and decision-making skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
