Salary/Wage Range: $59,662-$95,963. New hires are offered up to mid-range dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Summary
Coordinates, conducts, and schedules routes for transportation personnel and users of Transportation vehicles including maintaining certification files, selecting training resources, assigning work, and assisting with CDL-required annual driving tests. Coordinates and maintains files and records according to Federal and State mandates for vehicle operators. Develops, implements, and coordinates the training of all transportation staff including substitute/temporary/contract drivers Develops and promotes good community relations with NMSD community and school personnel.
Directly supervises all Transportation Department employees and oversees the Department’s operations and NMSD’s fleet. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
It is anticipated and expected that all functions of this position will be performed in a positive and respectful manner, with a strong focus on advancing the mission and vision of New Mexico School for the Deaf. The duties and competencies listed are comprehensive yet not all inclusive of this position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)
- Create and maintain Driver Qualification files required by NMSD policies and New Mexico Department of Transportation rules and regulations.
- Provide instruction and training to Bus Drivers and Ground Transportation personnel on federal, state, and local laws and regulations and NMSD policies pertaining to pupil transportation, passenger, safety, behavior management, and discipline.
- Recruit, hire and supervise School Bus and Ground Transportation Drivers. This includes but is not limited to conducting interviews, checking references and reviewing applications, providing ongoing feedback and evaluations.
- Perform annual evaluations for training staff and CDL-required annual driving performance check rides.
- Perform all duties of a driver when needed, including transporting students.
- Ensures that all vehicles within NMSD’s fleet are property maintained at all times including ongoing regular maintenance, regular vehicle safety inspections, and vehicle cleanliness.
- Complete all required reports including accident reports in a timely manner.
- Attend professional development sessions and take classes when needed.
- Implement procedures for training needs assessment and curriculum development by hosting periodic group in-services, performing individualized training and retraining.
- Train NMSD drivers (e.g., new, existing) on safe operation of school transportation vehicles. Training includes classroom training (e.g., student management, special needs, American Red Cross first aid training); and on-the-road training (e.g., inspection and operation of school transportation vehicles, road driving, evacuation).
- Responsible for working with the team to schedule and provide mandatory training to students (e.g. emergency bus evacuation).
- Analyze vehicular accidents through NMSD procedures. Provide, coordinate and schedule post-accident training.
- Input all new Drivers information and credential information into software.
- Manage, monitor, and ensure that all NMSD drivers (e.g., fleet, school buses) comply with New Mexico’s driver’s license (CDL and non-CDL) rules and regulations.
- Collaborate with various City, State and Federal groups regarding existing and potential school safety issues that affect safe transportation of students and staff.
- Plans and oversees routes for all students attending the Santa Fe and Albuquerque campuses. Works with families and respond to concerns in a timely manner.
- Serves as a member of the NMSD team working with other administrators and supervisors.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Position-Specific Qualifications/Requirements:
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of and related experience with transportation operations.
Other:
- Possesses ability and willingness to work flexible hours
- Possesses ability and willingness to respond to emergencies and/or support routes outside of normal working hours
- Possesses ability and willingness to obtain Defensive Driver Instructor certification
- Possesses knowledge of New Mexico Public Education Department School Transportation Standards, NMAC 6.41.4
