What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transportation Coordinator position at Navajo Preparatory School Inc?
PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Transportation Coordinator is responsible for providing bus and vehicular transportation and coordination services for Navajo Preparatory School, Inc. students and employees so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the school's curriculum and extracurricular program. The Transportation Coordinator coordinates and oversees all day-to-day activities of a diverse team of bus drivers.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must be 21 or more years old.
- Must pass an annual physical examination.
- Skills in the use of computers to record and document tasks and develop memorandums letters to staff, faculty and students.
- Must possess New Mexico CDL License issued by the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division with proper endorsements and attend annual recertification's
- Must be certified or become certified in First Aid and CPR.
- Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
- Ability to cope with stressful situations in a professional manner without losing composure.
- Must pass background checks on driving records and criminal history according to NPS Policy.
- Must be or become knowledgeable of Special Education transportation procedures.
Indian Preference:
Consideration for employment will be given to Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Tribal member with the required documentation including the necessary qualifications to meet the minimum requirements of the position. The Navajo/Indian preference law shall apply in all aspects of the position.
CLASSIFICATION
The position is based on 245 contract days.
Note: Notwithstanding the above, this position is subject to possible furlough, or reduction in force under NPS, Inc. Personnel Policies; due to unforeseen reductions in program funding that requires such general program changes.
SUPERVISOR
Primary: Associate Head of School for Academics and Operations
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Supervise all bus drivers including evaluations, job performance, and professional development plans.
- Supports and efficiently carries out responsibilities in accordance with Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc. (NPS) Policies and Procedures.
- Represents NPS in a manner reflecting professionalism and which enhances community understanding of the program.
- Instructs bus drivers and groups in theory and application of bus and activity vehicles skills to ensure student and school safety.
- Oversees routine vehicle maintenance performed by drivers, schedules appointments for vehicle service, and ensures vehicle maintenance files are complete and maintained within the Driver Schedule Program.
- Operates a safe and efficient school bus transportation program in accordance with New Mexico statues and regulations for transporting students: 6.41.4 NMAC and the BIA's Safe Motor Vehicle and Commercial Motor Vehicle Operation Policy.
- Ensure that thorough pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections are performed by bus drivers including checking the oil, fuel, brakes, lights, windshield wipers/water, and tire pressure. Additionally ensure that Safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits and blood borne pathogens kits are in all school vehicles.
- Maintains orderly conduct of passengers and reports undisciplined students to the Dean of Students.
- Conducts and coordinates monthly bus driver safety and department meetings.
- Provide and mandate random bus evacuation drills.
- Completes all training programs successfully.
- Maintains a driver log of work performed within Driver Schedule Program; makes timely reports of accidents, incidents and unusual occurrences.
- Completes required reports by the School.
- Manages driver's logs, timecards and time sheets for all bus drivers for payroll to Human Resources.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazard or physical risks, which require following basic safety procedures.
- Blood Borne Pathogen Training, CPR/First Aid Training required.
- Keep all buses clean and maintained and reports needs for servicing and/or repairs immediately.
- Maintains a bus/suburban transportation schedules within Driver Schedule Program for all school activities, which require a driver and vehicle, and medical forms for students in all school vehicles.
- Verifies GSA mileage and submits billing reports for payment to GSA.
- Completes all required paperwork and reporting for the Bureau of Indian Education.
- Comply with the transportation bus schedule as outlined in the Community Handbook.
- Maintains proper vehicle insurance records and registration in all school vehicles at all times.
- Verifies bus schedules for week-end transportation and ensures that substitute drivers are available, when needed.
- Assists in developing or revising bus routes to ensure safe and efficient service to the school, route efficiency.
- Relates and interacts with colleagues, supervisors, other school staff, students, parents and community members in a professional manner.
- Develops record keeping procedures and manages appropriate department records in accordance with applicable regulations, policies and standards.
- Commit to a growth plan that relates to the scope of services provided to the school.
- Serve as point of contact for route issues and parent/guardian concerns.
- Work in collaboration with Associate Head of School for Academics and Operations to determine weather delays or cancellations.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Associate Head of School for Academics and Operations and/or the Head of School
- May be required to drive a route if there are no drivers available for specific routes.
EVALUATION
Will be evaluated in accordance with the Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc. policies and procedures.
