Job - Engineer II

Location: Michigan Lower Peninsula

Work Arrangement: Fully Remote with occasional onsite meetings/site visits

Travel: 10% or less; generally, 1–2 site visits per month

Duration: Until Jul 2027 (with a possibility of extension)

Department: Engineering & Design – Electrical Distribution


Position Overview:

Client is seeking an Engineer II to support its Engineering & Design organization within Electrical Distribution. This position will primarily focus on Civil/Environmental Engineering, environmental compliance, SPCC, stormwater management, site development, and construction support for substations, high-voltage line projects, and other electrical distribution capital projects.

The ideal candidate will have a strong Civil, Environmental, or Construction Engineering background and an active Michigan Professional Engineer (PE) license. Utility and SPCC experience are not required and can be learned on the job.


Key Responsibilities:

Review, approve, and update SPCC (Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure) plans.

  • Review engineering drawings, blueprints, site plans, and construction documents.
  • Perform oil containment volume calculations and support stormwater management requirements.
  • Evaluate foundation selections and oil/secondary containment recommendations for new sites.
  • Update SPCC plans and engineering drawings using CAD/AutoCAD when required.
  • Maintain and track required environmental inspections and documentation for EPA compliance.
  • Conduct occasional site visits to evaluate existing conditions and future design requirements.
  • Support environmental compliance planning for capital construction projects.
  • Perform engineering calculations and provide technical recommendations related to site development and construction.
  • Collaborate with engineering, construction, environmental, and project teams to support project execution and regulatory compliance.


  • Required Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering field.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Michigan – REQUIRED.
  • Experience in Civil, Environmental, Construction, or related engineering.
  • Experience reviewing engineering drawings, blueprints, and site plans.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations and evaluate technical design requirements.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles related to site development, construction, drainage, stormwater, containment, or environmental compliance.


  • Preferred QualificationsExperience with SPCC plans and/or environmental compliance.
  • Experience with stormwater management.
  • Experience with oil or secondary containment systems.
  • Experience with site development/design and construction projects.
  • Experience with CAD/AutoCAD.
  • Experience working with EPA or other environmental regulatory requirements.
  • Utility, substation, or electrical distribution experience is a plus but not required.


Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate is a Michigan-licensed PE with a Civil, Environmental, or Construction Engineering background and experience in areas such as:

  • Site design/development
  • Construction engineering
  • Environmental compliance
  • Stormwater management
  • Oil/secondary containment
  • Engineering calculations
  • Blueprint/drawing review
  • CAD/AutoCAD


Important: Do not over-screen candidates for utility or SPCC experience. CMS Energy can provide training in these areas. The active Michigan PE license is non-negotiable.


Additional Information: Fully remote within the Michigan Lower Peninsula.

  • Occasional local travel/site visits, generally 1–2 times per month.
  • Travel is expected to be 10% or less.
  • Interview process can begin immediately.
  • Assignment has strong potential for extension, with approximately 3–4 years of anticipated workload.
