Senior Civil Engineer
Employment Type: Contract through 06/04/2027 (High potential for extension)
Location: Jackson, Michigan (Candidates may be based anywhere in Lower Peninsula Michigan)
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Civil Engineer to support natural gas capital projects for a leading energy utility organization. This role will provide civil engineering leadership across gas distribution, transmission, regulator stations, compression, and storage facilities.
The selected candidate will work within the Civil Engineering Group and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary project teams including project managers, operations personnel, and engineering consultants to execute critical infrastructure upgrade projects.
Candidates may be located anywhere in Michigan or be willing to relocate. Frequent travel to project sites throughout the Lower Peninsula is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support civil engineering activities for natural gas capital projects
- Define and scope civil engineering design and construction requirements
- Coordinate and manage external engineering consultants and contracted services
- Review engineering designs, technical specifications, and construction deliverables
- Support procurement and contracting activities for construction services
- Provide technical leadership and engineering oversight throughout project execution
- Assist with project closeout documentation including record drawings and test records
- Communicate project progress, risks, scope changes, schedule impacts, and quality concerns to leadership
- Conduct field visits for:
- Engineering kickoffs
- Pre-bid walkthroughs
- Construction inspections
- Milestone reviews
- Red-line walkdowns
- Construction issue resolution
Required Technical Skills
- Working knowledge of civil engineering design principles including:
- Site development/design
- Stormwater management
- Foundation design
- Storage tank design
- Pre-engineered metal buildings
- Environmental permitting (wetlands, erosion control, culverts, etc.)
- Experience developing and coordinating:
- Engineering drawings
- Technical specifications
- Consulting and construction contract documents
- Familiarity with applicable civil/structural engineering codes and standards including:
- IBC/MBC
- AISC Steel Construction Manual
- ACI 318
- AWS D1.1
- ASCE 7
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- Strong engineering problem-solving and leadership abilities
- Ability to work independently in industrial and construction environments
- Strong communication skills with the ability to provide project updates and risk assessments
- Commitment to safety and safe work practices
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) License in the State of Michigan preferred
- Previous utility, energy, gas transmission, or industrial infrastructure experience preferred
Work Environment & Travel Requirements
This position requires regular exposure to industrial natural gas facilities that may include:
- Loud, hot, and oily environments
- Elevated platforms and fixed ladders
- Confined or tight spaces
- Active construction sites and rough terrain
Travel expectations:
- Average of 3 days per week onsite travel
- Up to 5 days per week during critical project phases
