About the Role
The Stormwater Maintenance Technician II performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks and operates light to medium equipment within the Stormwater Section of the Public Services Department. This role supports the construction, maintenance, and repair of stormwater collection and detention systems to ensure effective drainage and protect public infrastructure and the environment.
Work involves activities such as cleaning and repairing storm drains and catch basins, maintaining swales and ditches, placing erosion control materials, and assisting with concrete and masonry work. Employees operate dump trucks, loaders, and other equipment, and may assist with snow and ice control operations. This position requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions and responding to after-hours call-backs as needed.
Work is performed under regular supervision and evaluated through observation and inspection to ensure adherence to safety practices, instructions, and established standards. Employees are subject to hazards associated with stormwater maintenance, including exposure to traffic, heavy equipment, confined spaces, extreme weather, and environmental conditions.
• Perform semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in maintaining and repairing stormwater infrastructure
• Operate dump trucks to haul materials such as dirt, gravel, and equipment
• Operate loaders and may assist with backhoe operations for basic excavation tasks
• Hand grade swales and ditches and place stabilization materials such as rip rap
• Clean and maintain storm drains and catch basins
• Set up traffic control devices, including cones and signage; may perform flagging duties
• Assist with minor repair and maintenance of equipment and vehicles
• Participate in snow and ice control operations as needed
• Perform other related duties as required
• High School Diploma or GED
• Two (2) to four (4) years of related experience in stormwater maintenance, construction, or public works;
OR
• An equivalent combination of education and experience
Special Requirements
• Possession of a valid North Carolina Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire
• Ability to work on-call and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed
Salary : $43,500 - $54,300
