About the Role
The Line Maintenance Mechanic II performs responsible unskilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, replacement, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer lines and appurtenances. This position is a key member of the crew responsible for ensuring the Town’s water and sewer infrastructure is properly installed, maintained, and repaired to meet community needs and regulatory standards.
Employees work under regular supervision and are evaluated through observation and inspection for adherence to instructions, trade practices, and safety standards. The work requires both indoor and outdoor activity in varying weather conditions and may include on-call and call-back assignments.
Serve as back-up to Line Maintenance Crew Leader
Operate tapping machine to make water and sewer taps and service connections meet standards
Lay water and sewer pipe; repair and replace sewer and water lines and related facilities
Install, service, and test water meters and meter setters
Operate sewer rodder to clear and unstop sewer lines
Operate front-end loader, dump trucks, jackhammers, tampers, pipe threading machines, tapping machines, trenchers, air compressors, and boring machines
Install hydrants, meters, valves, clamps, and related pipeline apparatus; set meter boxes; repair and replace fire hydrants
Operate tractor with bush hog attachment to mow and maintain sewer and water line easements and rights-of-way
Perform other related tasks as required
High School Diploma or GED and three to five years of experience in construction-related utility work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (Class A) with Tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within 18 months of hire
State Collection System I and/or Water Distribution C Certification strongly preferred
Salary : $43,500 - $54,300
