Under supervision, Accountant I-II performs professional accounting functions. This position applies accounting principles and professional judgment while maintaining accurate financial records, performing basic to complex accounting functions, and assisting with financial reporting and compliance initiatives.
Work Arrangement: The position requires on-site presence and is not a remote role.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Accountant I: Works under general supervision of the Administrative Services Director. Accounting duties are reviewed for technical accuracy, completeness, and proper application of accounting standards, rather than for routine methods or processes.
Accountant II: Works under minimal supervision of the Administrative Services Director. Performs full-scope professional accounting duties requiring independent judgment and initiative. Work is reviewed for overall results, accuracy, and compliance with accounting standards. The Accountant II independently applies accounting principles, maintains comprehensive accounting records, prepares complex reconciliations and journal entries, and assists with financial reporting, audit coordination, and regulatory compliance. This classification operates with substantially greater autonomy than Accountant I and serves as a technical accounting resource.

- Performs accounting duties including accounts payable and vendor management; all facets of payroll and related reporting; accounts receivable billing, tracking and collections; account maintenance/reconciliation; and inventory management.
- Responsible for utility billing including computing utility rates, account set up, disconnections, collection of delinquent utility accounts, and preparing annual assessment documents.
- Responsible for developing spreadsheets, data manipulation, database administration, and the preparation of finance documents, presentations, and Board of Trustees’ reports.
- Assists with contract and grant related tasks, including tracking, drafting documents, renewals, contract amendments, and preparing various notices.
- Reviews payment registers to confirm accuracy and prepares deposits.
- Analyzes financial data for accuracy and completeness within assigned areas.
- Assists with month-end and year-end close activities.
- Supports budget development, annual financial audits and financial statement preparation.
- Maintains assigned accounting records and supporting documentation in accordance with GAAP/GASB standards.
- Assists with health and wellness benefits, including processing employee insurance information, verifying premium charges from carriers and handling other insurance requests.
- Maintains accurate records in the Town’s personnel database, accounting practices, and benefits portal.
- Maintains confidentiality of financial and personnel-related information.
- Other duties as assigned.
Additional Accountant II Duties
- Independently prepares, reviews, and posts complex journal entries.
- Performs complete general ledger account reconciliations and independently resolves discrepancies.
- Leads assigned month-end and year-end close activities.
- Ensures compliance with GAAP/GASB standards and applicable accounting regulations.
- Prepares financial reports, schedules, and analyses for management review.
- Coordinates assigned accounting activities related to audits and regulatory reporting.
- Provides technical guidance and supervision to clerical staff regarding accounting classifications and procedures.
- Maintains strict confidentiality of sensitive financial and personnel-related information.
Level I
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in accounting or a closely related field .
- One (1) to three (3) years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience preferred .
- Clerical, administrative, or bookkeeping experience alone is not considered qualifying professional accounting experience.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in accounting or a closely related field .
- Three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience .
- One (1) year of experience performing duties equivalent to Accountant I with demonstrated ability to perform the full scope of Accountant II independently .
- Experience in a municipal or governmental accounting environment preferred.
