Job Description
Performs work setting up new electric meter accounts, conducting accurate meter readings, maintenance of customer accounts, and related work as needed. Work is performed under the general guidance of the Business Office Manager.
Essential Duties of the Position
The following duties are those considered most essential to the position. This does not preclude the delegation of other duties considered as necessary by management to successfully complete an assignment or project.
- Conducts reading and re-reading of meters on assigned routes.
- Installs, calibrates and maintains electric meters for residential, commercial and industrial customers.
- Disconnects/reconnects meters for move-in and move-out activities and non-payment.
- Monitors conditions of meters to include broken or inaccessible meters, maintenance issues, tampering, and initiates appropriate work orders.
- Responds to service orders including but not limited to: meter maintenance, exchanges, and customer requests.
- Explains meter readings to customers, manages disgruntled customers; and explains process for reconnection of disconnected service.
- Assists in creating and revising routes to facilitate efficient meter reading.
- Receives and responds to customer inquiries and complaints related to meter reading and high/low bill complaints.
- Coordinates with customer service and billing team to transmit meter data, receive connection/disconnection information, and other related work.
- Assist with underground utility locates as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Education and Experience
Knowledge of the methods, procedures, and terminology involved in the reading of electric meters and transmitting or recording consumption by manual or electronic means; knowledge of and ability to maintain compliance with safety protocols and regulatory standards during all field activities; knowledge of or ability to learn Town geography and street locations for routes; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to use computers, laptops and tablets or other electronic devices, and common office software programs; ability to work independently following a routine schedule; ability to prepare and analyze written or computer data; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, the public and town leaders.
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and at least one year experience in meter reading or customer service, with basic computer and general office skills. Or a combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills to complete the essential functions and job responsibilities of this position.
Possession of a Driver’s License valid in the State of North Carolina. May be required work extended hours to assist Line and Service employees during power outages, emergency situations or special projects.
Supplemental Information
This position’s physical requirements involve heavy work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required: balancing, feeling, hearing, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, reaching, speaking, standing, visual acuity, and/or walking.
Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently working near moving mechanical parts and traffic, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, and occasionally requires exposure to extreme cold and exposure to extreme heat; work is generally in a moderately loud noise location.
