Performs work to protect lives and property through activities associated with fire prevention, fire suppression, hazardous materials and emergency medical incidents; participates in the training and maintenance activities, and related services as directed. Work is performed under moderate supervision of a Captain.
The hourly rate for part-time firefighters is $18.24. The listed salary is the full range for full-time firefighters. Expected hiring rate for qualified candidates will include an additional:
- Up to 10% for experience
- Up to 5% for education
- 2.5% for Rescue Tech CertificationThe following duties are those considered most essential to the position. This does not preclude the delegation of other duties considered as necessary by management to successfully complete an assignment or project.
High school diploma or GED and at least 18 years old.
Possession of a driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina. Possession of North Carolina Firefighter 1 and 2 (NFPA 1001) and Emergency Medical Technician B (EMT) certifications. Additional certifications for Technical Rescuer and Emergency Vehicle Driver preferred. Initially and annually, must pass physical evaluation with the ability to climb steps/ladders up to 105 feet; push/pull/carry equipment and victim up to 175 pounds; complete repetitive motions similar to using an axe; and other common workplace operations as appropriate. Ability to work in stressful emergency situations during 24 hours shifts and on call as needed.
This position’s physical requirements involve heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, visual acuity, and/or walking.
Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to bloodborne pathogens, fumes, odors, mists, gases and in areas of poor ventilations and is be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large equipment).

- Responds promptly to fire alarms, emergency calls, and major incidents when notified while on duty.
- Enters burning structures, advances charged and uncharged hose lines, and applies appropriate extinguishing agents to control and extinguish fires.
- Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper floors for rescue. Climbs, crawls, and runs as necessary to accomplish fire extinguishment, rescue, and personal safety.
- Carries or moves heavy equipment and/or objects necessary to achieve fire extinguishment or rescue.
- Protects property from unnecessary smoke and water damage by utilizing salvage covers and positive pressure ventilation fans. Communicates effectively both verbally – via two-way radio and direct interaction - and in writing through the completion of reports, memos, and other documentation.
- Provides emergency medical service to fire or accident victims and assists the local Emergency medical service provider as necessary or when required.
- Inspects buildings for fire hazards and completes pre-fire plans as appropriate.
- Maintains fire hydrants on an annual basis.
- Maintains apparatus, equipment, buildings, and grounds on a daily, monthly an annual basis as directed.
- Maintains daily maintenance records and completes maintenance and equipment reports.
- Participates in all phases of training on fire and medical procedures, completing a minimum of 36 hours per year.
- Assists Company Officer in maintaining records and submitting reports.
- Serves as Acting Officer when so needed.
- Drives fire apparatus and operates pump and other equipment with firefighting, rescue, salvage, and maintenance operations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
