What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Equipment Operator III (Sewer) position at Town of Herndon, VA?
The purpose of this position is to operate medium to heavy automotive and construction equipment to perform town water and sewer lines repair and maintenance. Employees in this classification are responsible for operating any or all of the following items: flush trucks, CCTV inspection equipment, dump trucks, backhoes, bobcats, forklifts, snow removal equipment and other maintenance equipment as needed. This is a lead position and will support supervisors as needed and oversee O&M (Operation and Maintenance) projects.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Operates a variety of equipment for town water and sewer lines repair and maintenance; . Acts as lead operator for routine and emergency work to include updating Work Orders.
2. Assists in inspections of mechanical or lining of sewer repairs; installs and televises sewer lines; performs routine and emergency maintenance to water and sewer lines, clean sewer mains to ensure the unrestricted conveyance of wastewater; repairs main water line breaks; repairs and maintains fire hydrants and well buildings; backfills around ground meters.
2. Conducts and records inflow and infiltration (I&I) inspections of the town sewer system.
3. Support critical O&M tasks such as water quality sampling, valve exercising program, etc.
4. Maintains access to trunk lines and meter stations.
5. Checks and services flapper valves; assists with inspections of above-and-below ground system and checks air quality in confined spaces per permit requirements; climbs tanks using appropriate fall protection apparatus; sets up work zones and flags traffic around work zones as required; assists other crews with confined space testing as needed.
6. Assists marking “Miss Utility” tickets.
7. Assists with setup and breakdown of town special events; assists with snow removal and weather-related emergencies.
8. May assist in training and division activities coordination.
9. Performs other duties as required.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Five years of experience or training with heavy equipment operations
- 2 to 3 years’ experience in a supervisory capacity
- Previous applicable or related experience is required, municipal public works experience is desired.
- Possess to have the ability to obtain all of the following certifications within six months of employment: flagger, trench safety, confined space entry, and forklift
- Valid commercial driver’s license, Class B, with ability to obtain air brakes and tanker endorsement within nine months of employment

Due to the nature of a government providing services to the public all duties of this position are required to be fulfilled at the designated worksite in the town. No remote work is available.
Salary : $58,299 - $77,950
