Parks Maintainer II

The Town of East Hartford is seeking a Park Maintainer to perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and care of public parks, grounds, athletic fields, playgrounds, and related facilities. This position involves operating a variety of equipment and tools, performing landscaping and groundskeeping tasks, and ensuring that public spaces are clean, safe, and attractive for community use.

• Receives oral directions from the Foreman, who reviews work in progress.
• Prepares vehicles and equipment, loads materials, and positions equipment as needed.
• Services vehicles and equipment with fuel, lubricants, and accessories.
• Carries out work according to standard procedures.
• Drives all trucks and hauls trailers.
• Utilizes both hand tools and power equipment to complete assigned tasks.
• Performs manual work in the removal of trees, leaves, brush, trash, or refuse and in the installation or replacement of benches, fences, posts, rails, signs, and playground equipment.
• Operates small tractors, mowing machinery, and other equipment to mow and maintain fields and recreational areas.
• Grades, fertilizes, seeds, and lines playing fields.
• Operates snow blowers and small tractors to remove snow from park areas, including skating rinks.
• Sands sidewalks.
• Observes equipment performance during operation and reports malfunctions to the Supervisor.
• Cleans and maintains buildings, equipment, facilities, and grounds.
• Follows standard safety procedures and regulations.
• Reports tasks accomplished verbally to the Foreman.

• Performs semi-skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of recreational facilities and equipment, including rough carpentry, painting, or mixing cement.
• Performs heavy manual work in the removal of debris and trees from recreational areas.
• May operate fire hoses to prepare skating areas in winter.
• May perform pool maintenance work in summer.

• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
• Some experience in laborer work and in the safe operation of trucks.
• Ability to safely operate trucks and other motor vehicles.
• Ability to recognize the need for vehicle repairs and maintenance.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral instructions.
• Ability to lift and carry objects weighing 25–50 pounds; may be required to lift heavier weights occasionally.
• Ability to use hand tools and equipment requiring manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude.
• Ability to work in poor weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
• Sufficient stamina and good health to perform strenuous physical labor.

• High school diploma or GED.
• One (1) year of experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or related field.
• Valid Connecticut driver’s license; CDL preferred or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.

• Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Exposure to loud noise, dust, chemicals, and potentially hazardous equipment.
• Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), and use of hand tools.

Salary : $59,280 - $66,456
