GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY
The primary responsibility of an Equipment Operator position is the operation and routine maintenance of heavy equipment: backhoes, loaders, graders and trucks. In addition, it is the responsibility of the Equipment Operator, when no equipment is being operated, to also assist other highway division staff in boots on the ground operations such as maintaining public ways, ditching, tree cutting and chipping, leaf pile maintenance, etc.
RESPONSIBLE TO:
The Equipment Operators are directly responsible to the Highway Foreman.
SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITY
The following duties are customarily required:
1. Operate and provide routine maintenance on assigned equipment.
2. To abide by all federal, state, and local safety rules and regulations.
3. To ditch, fill, level, and maintain grade on Town roadways.
4. To keep the Highway Foreman advised of all problems, recommendations and solutions that may occur.
5. Maintain harmonious relations with other employees and the general public.
6. Perform all other duties as directed by the Highway Foreman.
7. In the absence of the Highway Forman, provide leadership, guidance, direction to the work crews, along with communicate safe work practice.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
· Demonstrate proficiency in the operation of backhoes, loaders, graders, and other heavy equipment used in the construction industry.
· Work efficiently and complete tasks within the time allotted.
· Ability to implement tasks with limited instruction and limited oversight.
· Sufficient communication skills to maintain good relations with the general public and other Town Departments.
· Demonstrated problem solving ability and ability to work well under pressure.
· Be familiar with and adhere to all safety practices.
· Ability to use tools and instruments as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· High school graduate.
· Have a valid State of Maine Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) – Operator’s License, or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
· Experience in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy equipment: backhoes, graders, loaders and trucks.
· Have a clean driving record.
· Be familiar with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other safety regulations that are associated with construction industry.
· Satisfactory completion of background check, physical examination and drug testing.
· Physical ability to lift 70 lbs.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
· Motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pick-up truck, and all manner of public works vehicles and equipment.

· While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
· The employee frequently is required to stand and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and smell.
· The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
· During snow operations, the employee is required to handle long work hours with limited time off.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
· The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position.
· While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
· The noise level in the work environment is often loud.
