What are the responsibilities and job description for the Production - Shift Supervisor - Addis Plant position at Tokai Carbon CB?
Summary/Objective
The role of Shift Supervisor overviews the daily activities and how employees perform during their shift. Shift Supervisors are responsible for maximizing the efficiencies of the the carbon black, cogeneration, and sufuric acid (Addis & Borger only) production process through managing people, schedules, supplies and communication coordination with relevant internal departments. This role ensures an organized, safe and productive workspace as well as addresses the needs and issues of front line production workers.
Essential Functions
- Manages and directs a team of production operators to ensure day to day tasks and operations are successful, efficient and are completed based off standard protocols from a safety, environmental and meets Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) consistently. This includes varying levels of participation in the following non-inclusive task list:
- Daily, monthly, annual performance review and monitoring
- Progressive discipline process/documentation development and maintenance
- Skill and career development
- Schedule development including daily, weekly and monthly task assignments in addition to time card review and approval
- Department or plant specific job training delivery or tracking
- Maintain workflow by providing regular and direct guidance to each assigned shift by:
- Monitoring all steps of the carbon black, cogeneration and sulfuric acid production processes and establishing production and schedule expectations while pivoting quickly and appropriately to address ad hoc safety, environmental or other external factors
- Evaluating, and resetting processing variables based on lab results to ensure particular yield results
- Observing control points and equipment
- Identifying and implementing cost reductions
- Assisting in the development of reporting procedures and processes
- Facilitating corrections to malfunctions within process control points
- Initializing the production/schedule/specification change process within the production team
- Ensuring staff performance and adherence to established procedures, protocols and regulations
- Recognizing and identifying causes of quality and production rate drifts and immediately communicating potential avenues for rectification
- Validating all rerun materials feed from designated tanks
- Certifying the proper segregation of tank compartments
- Ensuring all departmental paperwork is completed accurately and timely and distributed to the proper recipients
- Applying ad hoc process/procedure improvements that:
- Minimize Twilight
- Maximize utility of rerun
- Ensuring that product quality and quality controls are maintained during each designated shift
- Controlling performance and quality of all carbon black units, including cogeneration and acid production equipment and processes
- Initiating and fostering a spirit of cooperation within and between departments
- Complete the standardized verification of operational capabilities of the production equipment at all designated times and ad hoc as instructed
- Collaborate with the Maintenance Department by:
- Reporting proactively all anticipated preventative maintenance tasks
- Assist in establishing task priorities to enhance maintenance scheduling
- Communicate daily requirements and needs to the Maintenance Supervisor
- Supervising maintenance work (e.g. overtime, call-outs) in the absence of maintenance supervision
- Cooperate, influence, and periodically meet with Production and Plant leadership regarding:
- Continuing improvement efforts
- Audits and root cause analysis
- Introducing new and upcoming technologies to improve production
- Maintains safe and clean work environment by educating and directing operators on 5s fundamentals and the following:
- Usage of all equipment and resources
- Compliance with established policies and procedures
- Ensure environmental compliance limitations and parameters are addressed timely and appropriately
- Document and rectify all issues regarding spills, emissions and other hazards
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge through various avenues of continuing education
- Act with full authority of plant productions during the assigned shift in the absence of plant/production leadership
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Required Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 5 years experience leading teams or relevant supervisory experience
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- Possess impeccable attention to detail
- Self-confident and secure to be able to identify and groom high potential employees in critical-skill areas
- Impeccable time and project management skills with demonstrated implementation success
- Effective communicator, both oral and written
- Functional experience utilizing enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems or software
- Proficient using Microsoft Office software especially Excel and Word
- Successful completion of TCCB's internal Plant Operator training program (Borger Only)
- Must meet all qualifications of Oil Car Operator and Operator positions (Borger Only)
Preferred Education and Experience
- 3 years experience in carbon black or specialty chemical manufacturing
