What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pattern Maker & Sample Maker – Denim Bags and Accessories position at Toga Studio?
Job description:
We're looking for a skilled pattern and sample maker to develop production-ready patterns and prototypes for our denim bag and accessory line. You'll work directly with the founders on a per-pattern basis, with pay set for each design. Toga provides all the jeans.
Responsibilities
- Develop original patterns for denim bags and accessories from founder sketches, references, or existing samples
- Adapt patterns to work with upcycled denim, accounting for panel sizes, seams, pockets, and existing garment features
- Build first samples and prototypes, and revise them based on founder feedback
- Specify hardware, interfacing, lining, and trims for each design
- Grade or adjust patterns for size variations where needed
- Create and maintain clean, labeled pattern files (digital and/or physical), including seam allowances, notches, and grain lines
- Write clear construction notes and assist in creating tech packs and flat sketches so tailors can reproduce each design
- Perform quality checks on samples for durability, stitching, and finish
- Track pattern versions and maintain the sample library
- Meet agreed deadlines for each pattern and sample
Qualifications
- Proven pattern-making experience for bags and accessories
- Strong sample-making and sewing skills, comfortable working with heavyweight denim and industrial machines
- Knowledge of bag construction: linings, gussets, strap attachments, closures, and hardware
- Ability to design patterns that work around the constraints of upcycled material
- Familiarity with tech packs; CAD pattern software (e.g., CLO, Gerber, Optitex) is a plus
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written
- Able to work independently and meet deadlines
- Extremely organized, detail-oriented, and dependable
- Strong interest in sustainability and upcycling
