The Practical Law business within Thomson Reuters is looking for a temporary contractor with substantial state experience in civil litigation, especially court rules and procedures, to write and edit practical guidance for state lawyers (Georgia state).

• Remote work from 10–20 hours per week

• Requires Windows-based computer and high-speed internet

Practical Law is looking for temporary Litigation State Specialist contractors to work on documents published through its online services. Each State Specialist contractor will:

• Write, edit, and update state-specific litigation resources in accordance with Practical Law writing style, including:

  • Practice notes

  • Checklists

  • Standard documents explaining how to practice in state court

• Be available to answer questions and perform research on discrete state law issues that arise during Practical Law’s final review process

Candidates must have the following skills and experience:

• At least 6 years of experience working as a litigator in a law firm within the specified jurisdiction

• Strong familiarity with the jurisdiction’s court rules

• At least 75% of recent legal practice focused exclusively on civil litigation

• Ability to perform complex legal analysis

• Enthusiasm and ambition, with a desire to improve the efficiency of legal services

• Strong understanding of the needs and priorities of litigators and the broader legal market within the jurisdiction

• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with remote colleagues

• Strong work ethic and ability to meet deadlines

• Passion for writing and strong editing skills, including:

  • Close attention to detail and organization

  • Strong command of grammar, punctuation, and plain English

  • Ability to explain complex legal issues clearly and simply

• Ability to work independently in a paperless environment, including:

  • Navigating workplace intranets

  • Using the Microsoft Office suite

  • Learning in-house publishing systems without administrative support

Ideal candidates will also have:

• Experience handling litigation files as lead attorney

• Editorial experience on a law review, journal, or other news media publication

• Published works on litigation topics (e.g. bar association journal articles)

• Experience writing and presenting on litigation topics for continuing legal education

• Experience using Westlaw for legal research

• Strong academic credentials, including high class rank or academic honors in law school

Candidates may also be required to write on a specified topic.

The pay range that the employer in good faith reasonably expects to pay for this position is $40-$50/hr USD.
