Part Time Groundskeeper/Custodian
Reports To: Director of Operations
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are representative of the work required for this position. This list is not exhaustive.
- Grounds and Lawn Maintenance (Primary Function)
- Operate riding mowers, push mowers, edgers, string trimmers, and leaf blowers to maintain lawns, athletic fields, and other landscaped areas.
- Perform seasonal grounds work, including but not limited to mulching, weeding, pruning shrubs and trees, planting, and leaf removal.
- Inspect and maintain playground areas and equipment to ensure safety standards are met; report any potential hazards immediately.
- Maintain cleanliness of exterior areas, including sidewalks, parking lots, and fence lines, by removing trash and debris.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of outdoor athletic fields and for special events.
- Operate and perform routine maintenance on groundskeeping equipment, ensuring it is in safe and working order.
- Assist with snow and ice removal on walkways and entryways as required.
- Custodial Support (Secondary Function)
- Fill in for absent custodial staff at any school within the district, performing all required cleaning and sanitation duties.
- Perform routine custodial tasks, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and buffing floors.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, including fixtures, and restock supplies.
- Empty trash and recycling receptacles throughout buildings.
- Clean windows, walls, and common areas as directed.
- Respond to urgent cleanup needs, such as spills.
- Assist with event setup and teardown, including arranging tables, chairs, and other equipment.
- General Maintenance Assistance (As Needed)
- Assist skilled maintenance staff (e.g., electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians) with repairs and projects.
- Perform minor, unskilled, or semi-skilled maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs and ballasts, patching and painting walls, and repairing furniture.
- Perform minor plumbing repairs, such as unclogging drains and toilets.
- Move furniture, equipment, and supplies for classrooms, offices, and events.
- Complete work orders in a timely and professional manner.
- Perform preventative maintenance checks on building systems and equipment as assigned.
- General and Safety Responsibilities
- Adhere to all Thomasville City Schools policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Properly use and maintain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with students, staff, and the public.
- Secure district buildings and facilities as directed.
- Report any observed safety hazards, security concerns, or necessary repairs to the Director of Maintenance.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of verifiable experience in a combination of commercial groundskeeping, custodial work, or general building maintenance.
- Driver's License: Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Driver's License with a driving record acceptable to the district's insurance carrier.
- Skills and Abilities:
- Proficient in the safe operation and basic maintenance of lawn care equipment, including zero-turn mowers.
- Knowledge of standard cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
- Ability to perform semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks without immediate supervision.
- Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.
- Strong work ethic and ability to manage time effectively across multiple tasks.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
Physical Demands

- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
- Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
- Constant standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
- Frequent use of hands and arms to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
- Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
