Job Summary
The Phlebotomist is a laboratory professional responsible for performing various specimen collection techniques, including venipuncture, capillary draws, sweat chloride collection, and providing instructions for urine and specimen culture collection. Travel might be required and dependent on affiliated hospital distances.
Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks
- Promotes professionalism and interacts with colleagues in a way that promotes a cooperative working environment.
- Ensure specimens are obtained in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
- Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider.
- Supports organizational priorities to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Attains required competency and demonstrates the ability to follow procedural directions and protocols.
- Able to prioritize and organize workload and assist other coworkers to maintain productivity.
- Follows proper protocols for specimen packaging and specimen transport.
- Responsible for specimen accessioning as assigned.
- Demonstrates proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport.
- Performs proper drug screen collection and processing as assigned.
- Answers laboratory department phone calls.
- Demonstrates ability to recognize emergent conditions and reacts appropriately.
- Provides phlebotomy services in a professional and patient centered manner.
- Engages in self-evaluation of practice and takes action to improve knowledge and skills.
- Retains accountability for quality of care given to the patient.
- Promotes service excellence and growth of the laboratory.
- May work with multiple departments within the laboratory or across the hospital/health system.
- Performs sweat chloride collections as assigned.
- Demonstrates proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport.
- Responsible for other duties as assigned.
Required Education/Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Completion of an accredited phlebotomy or medical assistant program with clinical experience, or prior hands-on phlebotomy experience.
Preferred Education/Experience
- Experience working in a clinical setting is preferred.
Required Licenses/Certifications
Certification from a nationally recognized agency, required. Accepted agencies and certifications include:
- National Heathcareer Association – Certified Phlebotomy Technician: CPT (NHA)
- American Society for Clinical Pathology – Phlebotomy Technician: PBT (ASCP)
- American Medical Technologists – Registered Phlebotomy Technician: RPT (AMT)
- National Center for Competency Testing – National Certified Phlebotomy Technician: NCPT (NCCT)
- American Certification Agency – Certified Phlebotomy Technician: CPT (ACA) Valid Texas driver’s license.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
