Job Summary

The Grant Accountant II is responsible for performing professional accounting tasks, offering both administrative and technical support in the management and coordination of federal, state, private, and other sponsored grants and programs. This position ensures compliance with financial regulations and maintains accurate records to support effective program funding and reporting.

Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks

  • Prepare and submit federal/state/private grants deliverables including, journalizing grant-related transactions, preparing compliance reports/deliverables, and reconciling grants to the general ledger as required per individual sponsor.
  • Preparation and submission of quarterly, bi-annual, and annual financial status reports (FSR).
  • Prepare grant schedules (SEFA, SPTR, B4 & S4A) for the institutional Annual Financial Report, including confirmation of state and federal pass-through balances with other state agencies.
  • Prepare and post necessary entries in USAS. Draw down of cash funds as determined in sponsor contracts.
  • Review retro e-PAs for allowability with time and effort reporting by Sponsored Program and process GL corrections accordingly.
  • Ensures institutional compliance with all provisions set forth by awards, including any applicable federal, state or UT System requirements. Ensure compliance with regulatory audits/inspections and/or internal reviews regarding accounting and reporting for grants and contracts.
  • May serve as liaison to audit team(s) during on-site visits.
  • Work with Sponsored Programs office to ensure proper close out of awards, as needed.
  • Serve as liaison between Accounting and Sponsored Programs.
  • Resolve grant accounting and reporting issues, as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related fields.
  • Five (5) years of professional related experience in account reconciliations, journal entries or related field.
  • May accept a combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education/Experience

  • Two (2) years’ experience in an academic medical center or public university.


Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

  • Utilize multiple systems for work including PeopleSoft, nVision and USAS.
  • Strong numerical proficiency, good organizational and problem-solving skills, and excellent use of logic.
  • Solid Microsoft Excel Skills. Ability to work resourcefully and efficiently in terms of time management with a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and autonomy.
  • Effective interpersonal communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to maintain composure in difficult situations.
  • Ability to communicate financial information into language understood by all levels of the organization.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code Section 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
