The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, Department of Emergency Medicine, is seeking highly motivated Research Assistants to support a variety of clinical and research projects. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in medical research-ideal for individuals planning to pursue careers in medicine, research, or healthcare.
Under limited supervision, the successful candidate will provide both research and administrative support to the department. The ideal applicant will possess strong interpersonal and organizational skills, critical thinking abilities, and close attention to detail.
Duties and Responsibilities
Enrolled in a degree seeking program at UNM, Enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (Audit hours do not count), and if Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Screen for research participants through medical record review, telephone outreach, or in-person at UNM Hospital.
- Obtain informed consent from patients and families in compliance with study protocols and ethical standards.
- Collect, organize, and maintain research data through direct patient interaction or electronic medical record systems (Cerner FirstNet).
- Perform data entry, management, and basic statistical analysis.
- Conduct participant follow-up via telephone or email communication.
- Handle biological specimens, including collection, centrifugation, aliquoting, and freezing.
- Assist with laboratory and research activities, ensuring proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Maintain strict adherence to HIPAA, FDA regulations, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines.
- Draft, edit, and prepare manuscripts, reports, presentations, and other research documents.
- Create and deliver PowerPoint or similar presentations for meetings or research dissemination.
- Coordinate scheduling of research activities, meetings, and interviews.
- Manage correspondence, answer phones, and provide general administrative support to faculty and research staff.
- Track and organize expenditures, process reimbursements, and assist with purchasing activities.
- Communicate effectively with study participants, collaborators, and team members.
- Train and mentor students or new research staff as assigned.
- Oversee specific research projects or assigned tasks under the direction of the Research Manager or Coordinator.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

- Access to PowerChart.
- Completion of UNM Financial Conflicts of Interest and HIPAA training modules.
- Completion of CITI Human Research Protections Training within the past 2 years.
- Good organizational skills, ability to multitask, and attention to detail
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Google Calendar
