Material Handling CAD Designer-Drafter

Abel Womack, a market leader in the design and implementation of material handling systems, industrial automation and warehouse solutions, has an immediate need for an entry-level CAD Designer to join our team in Lawrence, MA.  The selected applicant will work and train with our team of top-notch, experienced engineers to design and implement warehouse solutions including layout and design, operational analysis and more.  Your engineering expertise and vision will help our customers find solutions for efficient operations, material flow and space utilization.

The successful CAD Designer/Drafter will:

• Coordinate all aspects of systems quotes to provide a smooth transition through the quoting stage, including interfacing with sub-contractors, end users, and internal customers.
• Assume responsibility for the successful, accurate, timely completion of the quote. 
• Post-order, coordinate all aspects of systems projects to provide a smooth transition through the implementation stage, including interfacing with sub-contractors, end users, and internal customers.
• Lead and assume responsibility for the successful completion of the project on time and on budget.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Provide technical support for all salespeople throughout the quoting stage of a project.
• Review all design parameters used to develop system, including products to be handled, throughputs, safety requirements, etc.
• Review system layouts for accuracy and make changes as required to correct problem areas
• Develop a preliminary project schedule for all new projects
• Conduct on-site verifications of existing conditions prior to the start of system development. Check all local codes that may affect Abel Womack-supplied equipment and ensure compliance.
• Work with suppliers and/or general contractors to assist them in providing accurate price quotes.
• Continually establish and maintain relationships and dialog with equipment suppliers to support development of designs, interfaces, firm pricing and delivery schedules.
• Upon receipt of an order, verify site conditions and dimensions, update project schedule, and reconcile costs to reflect any late equipment or pricing changes.
• Prepare engineered layout drawings, bills of materials, spare parts lists, maintenance manuals
• Order equipment and services
• Coordinate with sub-contractors to ensure timely project completion
• Monitor installation progress
• Support system check out, run-in and commissioning

REQUIREMENTS

• College degree (2-4 year) preferred but not required.  Areas of study might include mechanical engineering, business, or project management.
• 0-2 years’ experience working in a mechanical or industrial setting a plus.
• Experience and proficiency using AutoCAD required.
• Strong mechanical aptitude required.
• Time-management, scheduling and organizational skills required.
• Good communication skills required.
• Working understanding of conveyor systems, carousels, mobile storage systems, industrial robotics, AGV’s, automated storage and other material handling resources desired.  We will train well-qualified applicants.
• An understanding of material handling system controls is desired.
• Understanding of Lean Management tools such as 5S, material and information flow charts, and standard work would be a plus.
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook required.
