Structural Steel Inspector (Commercial & Industrial)
Greenfield, IN (Field-Based)
My client is seeking an experienced Structural Steel Inspector to oversee quality assurance, code compliance, and structural integrity for large-scale commercial developments and heavy industrial projects across Indiana. In this role, you will perform critical field inspections of structural steel framing, high-strength bolting, and welded connections to ensure total compliance with project specifications, AWS standards, and local building requirements.
Structural Steel Inspector Key Responsibilities
- Erection Inspection: Verify structural steel layout, plumbing, leveling, alignment, and framing tolerances against approved construction documents.
- Bolting Inspection: Perform visual and torque testing on high-strength bolted connections using snug-tight and pretension methods (Turn-of-Nut, Calibrated Wrench, TC bolts).
- Welding Inspection: Monitor and visually inspect structural field welds, verify Welder Performance Qualification Records (WPQR), and ensure adherence to Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
- Fireproofing & Coating: Inspect spray-applied fireproofing (SFRM) for required thickness, density, and adhesion substrate conditions.
- Documentation: Generate detailed daily field inspection reports, maintain non-conformance logs, and interface directly with project engineers, site superintendents, and structural fabricators.
Required Qualifications & Certifications
- Bolting: Current ICC Structural Steel and Bolting Special Inspector (S1) certification.
- Welding: Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) designation (highly preferred) or ICC Structural Welding Special Inspector (S2).
- High school diploma or equivalent minimum; Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management is a plus.
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years of hands-on structural steel inspection experience specifically on commercial buildings or heavy industrial sites.
- Ability to climb ladders, navigate scaffolding, work at heights, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record for traveling to various Indiana job sites.
Preferred Skills (Industrial Additions)
- ASNT Level II certification in Ultrasonic Testing (UT) or Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) for non-destructive weld testing.
- Current ICC Spray-Applied Fireproofing Special Inspector (86) certification.
- Prior experience working under AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction) and AWS D1.1 structural welding codes.
