What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Data Engineer position at The Phoenix Group?
Position Overview
We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to take ownership of the performance, scalability, and integrity of our core enterprise data platform. This role sits at the intersection of data engineering and database systems — you'll be building and optimizing the pipelines, structures, and cloud data architecture that our software and digital teams depend on daily.
This is a high-visibility individual contributor role for someone who thinks like an engineer first: you don't just maintain a database, you design how data should flow, scale, and stay reliable as the business grows. You'll work closely with software engineering and digital product teams, but you'll own the data layer end to end.
What You'll Do
Data Architecture & Optimization
- Design and optimize database structures, indexing strategies, and query performance across a modern Azure data stack
- Review code, table design, and data models with an eye toward scalability, not just current-state performance
- Evaluate data growth patterns and proactively architect for future capacity and cost-efficiency
Pipeline Engineering
- Design, build, and maintain data integration and ETL/ELT pipelines using cloud-native orchestration tools
- Monitor pipeline performance, troubleshoot failures and data drift, and continuously improve reliability
- Manage CI/CD deployment of database schemas and pipeline code across dev, staging, and production
Data Governance & Security
- Ensure the integrity, availability, and security of core enterprise data domains
- Implement data quality checks, schema validation, and deduplication processes in partnership with governance stakeholders
- Build out access controls, data masking, and encryption practices; support audits and vulnerability assessments
Reliability & Scale
- Manage backup/recovery strategy, replication, and failover to meet defined recovery objectives
- Support both cloud and on-prem data environments as part of a broader modernization effort
What You Bring
Required
- 5 years of experience in data engineering, database engineering, or a hybrid data/software engineering role
- Strong hands-on experience with a modern cloud data stack (Azure strongly preferred — SQL Database, Managed Instance, or equivalent)
- Demonstrated experience building and optimizing production-grade ETL/ELT pipelines at scale
- Advanced SQL skills — writing and tuning complex queries, stored procedures, and views
- Comfort owning infrastructure-as-code or automation for database/pipeline deployment
Preferred
- Experience with modern data platform tools such as Databricks, Synapse Analytics, or Microsoft Fabric
- Background that includes time as a software or application developer before moving into data — engineers who've made this transition tend to thrive in this role
- Familiarity with data cataloging/governance tooling (e.g., Purview or equivalent)
- Familiarity with observability platforms (e.g., Datadog)
- Relevant cloud certifications (Azure Data Engineer Associate or similar)
