DescriptionOverviewThe Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library, part of The New York Public Library, serves patrons who are eligible to borrow materials from the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) in the five boroughs of New York City and Long Island. The CPA department staff are critical to ensuring our 15,600 patrons with print disabilities have equal access to reading materials by processing, checking out, mailing, inspecting, and checking in, out over 450,000 items a year. CPAs inventory and inspect Braille books, handle mailings, and manage two ILS systems at the physical circulation desk and assist patrons of both the NLS and NYPL systems that are run through the Heiskell Library - with item processing, as well as guidance for the visually impaired. The department must also manage the nationally mandated XESS and RECALL quota weeding systems and the Federal recycling processes. In the future, they may also play a critical role in new downloading processes and duplication on demand to create books to fill patron needs.
