Overview
BookOps is the shared library services collaboration of New York Public Library and Brooklyn Public Library. BookOps coordinates the selection, acquisition, cataloging, processing and distribution of library materials for the member libraries. Cataloging provides bibliographic data and classification to make resources discoverable in the collections of NYPL and BPL.
Reporting to a Supervising Librarian, the Collections Processing Associate performs copy cataloging and edited complex copy-cataloging using the OCLC Connexion bibliographic utility and the ILS (Sierra) cataloging module. The materials that are entered into the database include resources in the research and circulating collections of the New York Public Library and the circulating collection of the Brooklyn Public Library. A significant focus of this position entails cataloging materials in English, with a smaller workload of Romance, Germanic, and Eastern European languages.
Responsibilities
- Performs copy cataloging and complex editing of copy catalog records for monographs for BookOps member libraries using OCLC Connexion, Sierra, and other related bibliographic tools
- Works with bibliographic and administrative data produced for and by Cataloging, Selection, Acquisitions, and Processing departments by applying appropriate cataloging policies, procedures, and classification rules for commercially published materials
- Searches and identifies cataloging and acquisition records and other vendor-supplied records to match bibliographic data for print and non-print materials ordered for BookOps member libraries
- Classifies monographs and assigns call numbers as needed
- Performs catalog maintenance and bibliographic quality control tasks
- Verifies that the correct material has been received for cataloging and physical processing
- Assists in organizing physical storage of materials and reducing any backlog of materials in the department
- Performs related duties as required
Required Education & Certifications
- High School diploma or High School equivalency required
- Cataloging experience in a library processing environment
- Familiarity with MARC21 format for bibliographic data
- Familiarity with the OCLC Connexion client and ILS systems
- Reading knowledge of one or more languages other than English
- Good interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in organizing and handling detailed work processes
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently
