What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Intern position at The Museum of Flight?
The Museum of Flight Library Intern is a competent collections team member who will process, catalog, and partially digitize assigned library items within the Harl V. Brackin Memorial Library, at our Main Campus. Specific duties may include fully processing material for cataloging, completely cataloging each title in the Library’s ILS, EOS.Web, rehousing items where needed, and preparing items for archival-quality storage. Project finalization usually includes working with our Digitization Specialist to assist with scanning items, metadata creation for online access, and adding works to the Museum’s online digital collections database.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

- Survey the state of the assigned collections and works with the Supervisory Librarian to create an effective plan for processing and cataloging the materials.
- Completely catalog the material in the assigned collections and add records for items to the Library’s ILS, EOS.Web.
- Rehouse and label materials according to accepted library and museum standards and best practices.
- Assist with selecting items for digitization and assists with creating metadata records for digital objects.
- Document the project and assist the Supervisory Librarian in writing project report, article for the museum’s newsletter, or other outlets.
- Assist with other library and/or collections tasks as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of a graduate degree program in Museum Studies, Information Studies, Library Science, or related field.
- 0-2 years of experience in an archives, library, or museum collections environment desirable.
- Experience with EOS.WEB or other Library ILS a plus
Knowledge
- Strong understanding of library best practices and professionally accepted standards.
- Familiarity with cataloging library items.
Skills
- Advanced oral and written communication skills
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office/365.
Abilities
- Ability to demonstrate proper material handling and processing techniques.
- Detail-oriented.
- Ability to work in a team-based environment as well as independently with self-initiative and minimal supervision.

- Schedule is set by the supervisor with flexibility for evening and variable hours based on Museum need.
- This position works primarily Monday through Friday with flexibility for evening and variable hours based on Museum need.

- Able to lift up to 30 lbs. unassisted.
- Careful handling of delicate and rare items; works in an office environment with long sedentary periods and repetitive wrist and arm movement.
- The ability to focus, bend, carry, reach to the side, front and overhead, push, pull, walk, stand, twist and squat are occasional requirements in a normal office setting.
- Able to use a ladder and work in elevated spaces for short periods of time to place and retrieve objects from high shelves.
Compensation
The pay for this position is $22.00.
