This position runs from July 6th through August 21st, with the possible extension to August 28th.

Prep dates: July 6th - July 17th, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Residency Dates: / July 19th - July 24th / August 2rd - August 7th / August 16th - August 21st

During the 3 Residency weeks, day begins at approximately 1:00 pm and end the next morning when students leave university housing.

Must be at least 25 years of age to fulfill chaperone responsibilities as required by program contract.

Weekly salary range for this position is, $1,545.00.

The Program Instructor works as part of the Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) program team to facilitate activities from mid-July through end-of-August for rising high school seniors at the Museum of Flight. The WAS team includes the Administrative Coordinator and certified WA state teachers, and reports to the WAS Program Manager. Every summer, 40 high school students per week are invited to the WAS Summer Residencies. The Residency is a 6-day overnight experience where participants work with aerospace professionals to plan a ‘Mission to Mars’, tour local industry organizations, and compete in engineering challenges. The WAS Program Instructor chaperones afternoon tours, leads evening engineering challenges, and acts as lead chaperone and emergency contact at the University of Washington campus housing, where students lodge Sunday – Thursday night. While you stay at the university’s campus housing during Residency weeks, the cost of lodging and 2 meals per day will be covered by the Museum.

Summary

The Program Instructor supports the mission of The Museum of Flight by providing a wide variety of instructional leadership and oversight for assigned programs, providing mentorship throughout the duration of the program, which at times includes the supervision, care and ensuring the well-being of student participants. It is paramount this person represents The Museum of Flight, its Vision and Mission, with the highest level of professionalism and integrity, both internally and externally, in all aspects of the position.

  • Deliver programming and curriculum in STEM-focused areas to K-12 students (small and large groups) in a variety of settings, including on-site (at the museum), or other learning settings.
  • Manage student behavior, act as in-loco-parentis at off-site/overnight programs and provide educational and program support to participants.
  • Assume program leadership responsibility and authority over students during non-program hours yet still under supervision by The Museum of Flight.
  • Communicate and coordinate with internal departments in regard to the needs and logistics of program(s).
  • Act as a point of contact and provide general support for all stakeholders, internal and external, in regard to the program from inception to launch.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • A minimum of two (2) years of informal or formal education and/or museum work experience in delivering educational programs required.
  • Experience working with students, grades K-12, required.
  • Related experience with adolescents in an academic setting that includes high school level science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) curriculum a plus.


Knowledge

  • Knowledge of/interest in aerospace, history, museum studies, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) is required.
  • Strong knowledge of office collaboration systems, such as virtual meeting platforms, drive-sharing, and digital calendars.


Skills

  • Excellent leadership skills and the ability to create an environment that inspires and motivates, fosters collaboration, and encourages open communication.
  • Demonstrates efficient communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite including Teams, Excel, and PowerPoint.


Abilities

  • Able to maintain confidence, authority, and self-direction in variable and changing circumstances.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in organization, diligence, problem solving.


License & Certification

  • Current First Aid, CPR and AED certification, or may be obtained prior to first day of programming through the provided Museum certification training or other.

  • Will be assigned a primary schedule with hours based on assigned program.
  • May require working additional hours including evenings, nights, and weekends based on Museum need.
  • Some local travel is expected for this position.

  • Must be at least 25 years of age to fulfill chaperone responsibilities as required by program contract.
  • On-site attendance is essential to perform the duties of this position.
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs. with assistance.
  • This position works under normal office conditions that include repetitive wrist and arm movement and long periods of sitting or standing.
  • On occasion, must be able to be physically active 8 hours or more per day.
  • The ability to bend, carry, reach to the side, front and overhead, push, pull, focus, walk, stand, twist and squat are occasional requirements in a normal education or office setting.
