POSITION OVERVIEW: The Literacy Interventionist provides targeted and intensive literacy instruction to high school students who require additional support in reading and written language. Working individually and with small groups, the Literacy Interventionist uses diagnostic assessment, progress-monitoring data, and evidence-based practices grounded in the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy to identify student needs, provide intervention, and accelerate literacy growth. The Literacy Interventionist works collaboratively with advisors, learning specialists, school leaders, and families and serves as a literacy resource to educators across The Met's six high school campuses. EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required. Rhode Island Reading Specialist/Consultant Certification, Grades PK–12, required for this assignment, or ability to obtain appropriate Rhode Island certification Must meet Rhode Island Right to Read proficiency requirements for literacy/reading interventionists Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provide explicit, systematic, evidence-based literacy intervention to individual students and small groups, with particular attention to students reading significantly below grade level. Provide Structured Literacy instruction based on identified student needs, including foundational reading skills, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and written language. Administer and analyze literacy screening, diagnostic, and progress-monitoring assessments to identify student needs, develop appropriate interventions, and adjust instruction based on student progress. Design, implement, and monitor targeted Tier II and intensive Tier III literacy interventions within The Met's Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). Develop, implement, document, and monitor Personal Literacy Plans (PLPs) for students requiring literacy intervention and coordinate support. Maintain a caseload of identified students across The Met's campuses, including appropriate intervention schedules, progress-monitoring data, and documentation of student outcomes. Collaborate with advisors, learning specialists, content-area teachers, school leaders, families, and student support teams to develop and monitor effective literacy supports. Participate in MTSS, IEP, and other student support meetings as appropriate, providing literacy expertise, assessment information, progress data, and instructional recommendations. Support educators through consultation, modeling, resources, and job-embedded coaching to strengthen evidence-based literacy practices and help students access grade-level and content-area learning. Provide professional learning and serve as a school-wide resource related to adolescent literacy, Structured Literacy, assessment, intervention, and effective practices for supporting students with diverse literacy needs. Support fidelity of implementation of evidence-based literacy interventions and contribute to the ongoing evaluation and improvement of The Met's literacy support systems. Support students in connecting literacy development to their academic coursework, Individual Learning Plans, internships, exhibitions, and other authentic learning experiences. Communicate regularly with students, families, and educators regarding student progress, intervention effectiveness, and next steps. Participate in ongoing professional learning and maintain current knowledge of Rhode Island literacy requirements, the Science of Reading, Structured Literacy, and effective adolescent literacy intervention. Perform other related duties as assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Strong knowledge of the Science of Reading, Structured Literacy, and adolescent literacy development. Expertise in literacy assessment, intervention planning, and progress monitoring. Knowledge of MTSS and evidence-based Tier II and Tier III intervention. Ability to provide effective individual and small-group instruction to high school students with diverse literacy needs. Ability to analyze student data and adjust intervention based on student response. Strong collaboration, communication, organization, and time-management skills. Ability to support and coach educators in implementing effective literacy practices. Asset-based, student-centered, and solution-focused approach to working with young people.
