About Us:
The Language Labs is a fast-growing, multicultural language center proudly serving schools, libraries, and community partners across the Chicagoland area. We provide high-quality, inclusive language services and are expanding our team of ASL Interpreters to support staff meetings, school programs, storytimes, and family events.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a professional, reliable, and friendly ASL Interpreter to provide interpreting services for:
- Staff meetings
- School meetings (general education & parent communication)
- Bilingual/ASL storytimes
- Workshops and community events
- Occasional school-based programs and family engagement nights
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys educational environments, working with families, and fostering inclusive communication.
Responsibilities:
- Interpret between spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL) during meetings, classes, and events
- Maintain professionalism, accuracy, and confidentiality at all times
- Support school partners, families, and staff with culturally sensitive communication
- Arrive punctually and prepared for each assignment
- Adapt to a variety of educational and community settings
- Represent The Language Labs with warmth, professionalism, and respect
Qualifications:
- Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Experience in educational or community interpreting preferred
- Strong understanding of interpreter ethics and best practices
- Comfortable working with children, families, and school staff
- Ability to maintain confidentiality per FERPA standards
- RID certification or equivalent is a plus, but not required
Schedule & Hours:
- Flexible, assignment-based
- Opportunities during school hours, after school, evenings, and weekends
- Ideal for part-time, per-diem, or supplemental work
Compensation:
- $45 per hour
- 2-hour minimum per assignment
- Mileage reimbursement for all in-person assignments
- Opportunities for additional hours through special events and storytime programs
