Job Description – Research Nurse

Position Title: Research Nurse

Employment Type: Part-Time or Full-Time (Initially 20 hours/week, with potential to increase up to 40 hours/week) Schedule: 7:30 AM – 2:00 PM

Location: Onsite (Palo Alto, CA)

The ideal candidate is an independent, self-driven clinician who possesses strong hands-on experience with specialized clinical data gathering and direct patient care in a clinical trials or research environment.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Protocol Execution

• Participant Assessments: Lead the clinical components of research participant visits, accurately obtaining vital signs and measuring physical metrics including height, weight, arm circumference, waist circumference, and hip circumference.
• Specialized Testing: Perform 12-lead ECGs using sponsor-provided equipment and conduct spirometry assessments according to strict protocol specifications.
• Specimen Collection: Safely collect and process blood, urine, and saliva specimens from research participants of all ages and backgrounds.
• Medication Administration: Administer protocol-required medications, including albuterol via inhaler and valved holding chamber, following established therapeutic guidelines.
• Participant Support: Provide direct support, study-related refreshments, and a high-quality clinical environment for study participants throughout their visits.
  
  

Quality, Compliance & Administration

• Good Clinical Practices (GCP): Implement established Good Clinical Practices and maintain regulatory compliance across all interactions with study participants, families, and colleagues.
• Safety Monitoring: Actively identify adverse reactions to study treatments and precisely execute the required protocol documentation to record and report these safety events.
• Data Integrity: Utilize electronic data capture (EDC) systems and manage research databases to ensure accurate documentation and secure transmission of clinical study data.
• Team Guidance: Work under moderate supervision while providing appropriate clinical direction and work delegation to research support staff.
  
  

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.
• Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience.
• Core Competencies: Strong clinical skill foundation, specifically with phlebotomy/blood draws. Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage competing tasks, and operate as a self-driven team member.
  
  

Certifications and Licenses

• Current, active license as a Registered Nurse in the state of California.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR certification.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California non-commercial class driver's license.
  
  

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• Proven ability to communicate complex medical and research-related information effectively to research subjects across diverse age groups and backgrounds.
• High discretion and the ability to strictly identify, manage, and safeguard confidential and sensitive patient information (both written and verbal).
• Comfort implementing research protocols with minimal supervision and some baseline operational guidance.
  
  

Physical Requirements

• Frequent: Standing, walking, sitting, performing desk-based computer tasks, utilizing telephone lines, writing by hand, sorting/filing paperwork, twisting, bending, stooping, squatting, and light grasping/fine manipulation.
• Occasional: Reaching or working above shoulders, forceful grasping, and operating foot or hand controls.
• Rare: Kneeling, crawling, climbing ladders/scaffolds, manual pipetting, and basic laboratory cleanup workflows.
