Ophthalmic Technician

Location: Honolulu, HI

Job Type: Full-Time

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM (occasional Saturday as needed)

Reports To: Program Manager

Work Setting: On-site, Clinical / Medical Facility

Job Overview

The Ophthalmic Technician supports the delivery of high-quality ophthalmic and vision care services to a diverse patient population. This role performs a full range of technical and clinical duties related to ophthalmic services, diagnostic testing, surgical support, and patient care within a laser refractive surgery and ophthalmology setting.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Technical Duties

  • Perform a full range of ophthalmic technical services using provided facilities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Conduct diagnostic examinations and document procedures, findings, and treatment records in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assist with ophthalmic refractions and diagnostic testing under the supervision of an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
  • Identify abnormal findings and promptly notify the supervising provider.
  • Refer patients appropriately for optometric or ophthalmologic consultation.

Surgical & Laser Center Support

  • Assist with pre-operative evaluations, including corneal topography and pachymetry.
  • Prepare operating rooms and ensure appropriate equipment and instruments are available.
  • Maintain sterile technique for ophthalmic surgical procedures.
  • Assist with laser refractive surgery by ensuring laser equipment functionality and supporting the surgeon during procedures.
  • Provide intra-operative support as both surgical assistant and scrub assistant.
  • Perform post-operative duties including instrument cleaning, sterilization, incident reporting (if required), and equipment servicing coordination.

Patient Care & Education

  • Assist providers with routine and specialty contact lens services.
  • Provide post-operative patient support, including refractions and follow-up diagnostic testing.
  • Offer telephone-based patient assistance following facility protocols.
  • Educate and support patients and families as appropriate.

Education, Research & Administrative Support

  • Participate in department meetings to review patient care and outcomes.
  • Support clinical research activities as directed.
  • Provide clinical instruction to students and trainees rotating through ophthalmology services.
  • Maintain professional appearance and conduct at all times.
  • Complete reports, documentation, and additional duties as assigned.
  • Follow all applicable policies, procedures, and workplace standards.

Qualifications

Required Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of clinical experience, with at least six (6) months within the past 12 months.
  • Practical knowledge of ophthalmic surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies.
  • Ability to recognize deviations from normal clinical conditions and take appropriate action.

Certifications & Clearances

  • Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross).
  • N95 respirator fit clearance prior to start and annually thereafter.
  • Tuberculosis screening within the past three (3) months.
  • Required immunizations, including:
  • Tdap
  • MMR (or positive titer)
  • Varicella (or positive titer/history)
  • Hepatitis B (series or positive titer)
  • Annual influenza vaccine
  • Ability to pass a background check and any additional required clearances.
  • Annual medical clearance required.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong communication skills (verbal, written, in-person, and telephone).
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Acrobat).
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a healthcare team.
  • Ability to respond to patient and customer needs with urgency and professionalism.
  • English fluency required.

Working Conditions

  • On-site work in a professional clinical setting in Honolulu, HI.
  • Standard 8-hour shifts with unpaid lunch break.
  • Extended periods of standing, sitting, and computer use.
  • May require flexible scheduling, including holidays or extended hours.
  • Occasional travel may be required for training or professional development.
