ABOUT US _______________________________________________________________

JLA is committed to:

❖ Challenging inquisitive minds to think critically

and creatively in pursuit of the highest academic standards across all disciplines.

❖ Putting values into action by embedding leadership training and community service into

the heart of the educational program.

❖ Engaging the mind and stirring the soul to connect with the Jewish past and the Jewish

present, the Jewish People and the Jewish State, through the broad and embracing lens

of Modern Orthodoxy.

We are carefully creating a faculty culture that is values-driven, committed to high standards

and high support, rooted in respect for all, and in an unabiding love for what we do. Click here

HEBREW LANGUAGE AT JLA _________________________________________________

JLA is committed to accepting mission-appropriate students who seek to grow in their

understanding of and appreciation for Judaism, irrespective of any prior experience with Jewish

learning, Hebrew language, and irrespective of their or their family’s personal level of

observance. On campus and at all school functions, Jewish life and learning will be conducted in

accordance with Modern Orthodox standards and perspectives.

All JLA students will take Hebrew twice a week from 6th grade through 12th grade. The two

periods per week will be supplemented by the fact that the first month of school, every year, for

grades 9 through 12, will be spent in Israel. We are partnering with the Alexander Muss High

School In Israel to create a completely immersive month-long experience for each grade that

focuses solely on Hebrew Language, Tanach, Jewish History, Machshava, Zionism, and

Contemporary Israel.

Some of our students will be coming from Jewish Day Schools and others will not. A few will

come from native Hebrew speaking homes, the vast majority will not. There will therefore be

multiple levels of Hebrew offered at every grade.

The focus of the Hebrew Language program at JLA will be spoken language. We believe that

Hebrew Language programs in Jewish Day Schools often are not successful because of תפסת

תפסת לא מרובה. We are therefore aiming to narrow the focus in order to improve the quality of

the results. Our hope is to take what has been proven to work in the Ulpan model and

implement it in our classrooms.

Despite the wide range of Hebrew backgrounds amongst our students, JLA is only accepting

students capable of doing Honors level work or above. So the rigor of our courses should be

high, even if the starting level of Hebrew proficiency is low.
