The International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD) preserves and promotes dance by people of African ancestry or origin, and assists and increases opportunities for artists in advocacy, audience development, education, funding, networking, performance, philosophical dialogue, and touring. Our vision is for dance, by people of African ancestry or origin, to be revered, respected, and preserved in the consciousness and cultural institutions of all people.
POSITION SUMMARY
IABD is seeking a collaborative, organized, and data-minded Membership Manager to lead our efforts to grow, support, and engage a diverse and global membership base. This role will focus on retaining and deepening relationships with current members, recruiting and securing new members, expanding member benefits, and leveraging data to shape strategy and measure impact.
The ideal candidate is both people-centered and systems-savvy—someone who can connect authentically with artists and institutions while growing and managing the backbone of IABD’s membership program. Supporting and cultivating international membership growth is an important part of this work, and the Membership Manager should be comfortable engaging with communities across borders and time zones.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
In partnership with IABD’s leadership, the Membership Manager holds responsibilities for:
Membership Growth & Recruitment
· Develop and implement strategies to recruit individual and organizational members, with attention to both domestic and international Black dance communities.
· Develop and implement strategies to recruit members from outside of the dance field.
· Build relationships with dance artists, collectives, and institutions through outreach, events, and direct engagement.
· Represent IABD at conferences, webinars, and community events to grow visibility and invite new members.
Member Engagement & Retention
· Foster meaningful connections with members through intentional communications, check-ins, and listening sessions.
· Design and execute member onboarding, renewal, and appreciation campaigns.
· Regularly execute member satisfaction surveys to determine member needs and create responsive strategies that deepen connection and retention.
Member Benefits Development
· Work in partnership with IABD staff and members to enhance existing benefits and create new offerings that serve artists and organizations at all stages.
· Support the delivery of programs, discounts, resources, and professional development opportunities tied to membership.
· Ensure that benefits reflect the needs and priorities of a culturally and geographically diverse community.
Volunteer Coordination
· Recruit, organize, and support volunteers to assist with events, outreach initiatives, and member engagement.
· Match volunteers with opportunities that align with their skills and interests.
· Track and recognize volunteer contributions, fostering a sense of ownership and community.
· Collaborate with other departments to ensure volunteers are effectively integrated into IABD’s mission and programming.
Data & Systems Management
· Maintain accurate membership and volunteer records and communications within the CRM/database.
· Use data to track member engagement, use of IABD services, identify trends, and inform strategy.
· Generate regular reports to share insights with IABD leadership and guide ongoing improvements.
Collaboration & Community
· Coordinate with the Programs, Marketing, and Development teams to ensure alignment and visibility of membership needs, interests, and expectations.
· Serve as a key point of contact and support for members and volunteers with questions, needs, or ideas.
· Contribute to a culture of care, creativity, and accountability in service to our mission.
Internship Supervision & Mentorship
· Supervise and mentor the Membership Intern, providing structured onboarding, guidance, and regular feedback to support their professional development.
· Assign projects that align with IABD’s membership goals, offering hands-on experience in member engagement, CRM systems, and nonprofit administration.
· Create a supportive, culturally affirming learning environment grounded in IABD’s values and commitment to emerging leaders.
· Collaborate across departments to ensure the intern’s work is integrated, impactful, and aligned with broader organizational goals.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor’s degree in arts administration, business, marketing, communications, nonprofit management, or a related field; or, at least 3-5 years of relevant work experience in membership, community engagement, volunteer coordination, or customer relationship management.
· Familiarity with the performing arts, dance field, or related nonprofit sector.
· Experience with CRM or membership databases (e.g., YourMembership, Salesforce, Neon, MemberClicks) and a data-driven mindset.
· Comfort with digital tools including Zoom, Google Workspace, and membership or marketing platforms.
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a deep respect for historically Black and ever-evolving cultural traditions and communities.
· Experience managing volunteers or coordinating community-based initiatives.
· Experience engaging international or geographically dispersed communities.
· Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
· A collaborative spirit and flexibility to work across departments and adapt to evolving needs.
· Willingness/ability to travel.
· Bilingual or multilingual skills a plus, but not required.
