Environmental Laboratory Technician II (49404)

General Description:

The purpose of this job within the organization is to organize and collect samples and perform various test and analysis on wastewater for regulatory compliance. This job works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences. Note: This position may require work on nights, weekends and/or holidays.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree with college level training in environmental science, chemistry, microbiology, water and wastewater with two years of experience in an environmental laboratory is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Valid Driver’s License

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Considerable knowledge and proficiency in laboratory skills, including analysis and interpretation of analytical methods and results.
• Knowledge of wastewater/water treatment plant operations.
• Knowledge of computer systems and software, to include word processing, statistical functions, charting, graphing, etc.
• Ability to perform and understand mathematic activities including basic algebra and statistics.
• Ability to follow directions and perform functions and analysis from written, technical directions.
• Ability to perform duties and responsibilities with acute attention to detail.
• Ability to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills in evaluating the significance of laboratory results, analytical data, equipment performance, and unusual observations.
• Ability to interpret and apply environmental regulations.
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
• Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
• Ability to respond to emergency situations 24 hours per day.
• Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
• Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
• Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Monitors, collects, and performs field and laboratory analysis on samples for NPDES permit, Industrial Pretreatment Program and process control sampling.
2. Collects samples at off-site locations whenever needed.
3. Troubleshoots samplers and sampling equipment.
4. Assist with industrial pretreatment sampling.
5. Maintains field equipment, instrumentation, and vehicle(s).
6. Records associated calibration, operation, routine maintenance, and service/repairs including quality control/quality assurance requirements on laboratory equipment.
7. Maintains paper and electronic copies of chain of custodies and any other lab related records.
8. Prepares bottles and other supplies as needed.
9. Distributes supplies and chemicals for laboratory.
10. Performs analytical work in accordance with Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures, as prescribed by applicable state and federal regulations.
11. Uses and maintains laboratory equipment/instrumentation along with all associated records.
12. Participates in the administration of the quality control/quality assurance program.
13. Communicates effectively with peers, both verbally and in writing. Note: Communication shall include but is not limited to; reporting lab results in a timely manner, reduction and interpretation of analytical data, and detection of possible abnormalities and/or anomalies.
14. Assists laboratory supervisor with all tasks required for laboratory certification through the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.
15. Assists lab supervisor with data management, including information management system software, record-keeping, and compilation of results.
16. Assists wastewater operations with process control sampling and analyses.
17. Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
