General Description:
The purpose of this class within the organization is to perform difficult technical work in the inspections, repair and maintenance of electrical substation equipment. This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college in vocational training or related field. Minimum of 3 years of progressive Electric Substation Utility experience. Must successfully complete Substation and Regulator School from a training organization recognized by Electricity or the American Public Power Administration. The equivalent work experience and education may be considered.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Certificate, IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level I or II Certificate, Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and current DOT Medical Card required.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of the basic operation of computers and computer programs.
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions of the work.
- General knowledge of the design and principles of various types of relays and other instruments used in electric substations.
- Knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and testing of instruments and controls.
- Ability to read and understand schematic diagrams.
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
- Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
- Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.
Essential Job Functions:
- Leads crew in daily work to achieve substation and system reliability; prepares daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance schedules for substation equipment in order to ensure proper operation.
- Performs testing of substation equipment and prepares necessary reports to meet City standards and electrical regulations; troubleshoots distribution system and substation equipment problems to ensure system reliability.
- Repairs and replaces various substation equipment including circuit breakers, voltage regulators and battery banks.
- Coordinates projects with co-workers, other City departments, contractors, and consulting engineers in order to achieve the overall City goal.
- Reads plans and contracts to assist in coordinating the construction of new substations.
- Performs preventative maintenance on electrical equipment in substations.
- Performs switching orders for transferring electrical loads, isolating electrical circuits and substations.
- Reviews electronic relay device settings to ensure system protection.
- Pulls after-hours rotational call on substations, generators, traffic signals, and electric locates.
- Responds to system outages and assists in restoration of electric services as needed.
- Performs all other duties as may be required to meet organizational needs.
