The next Entry-Level Eligibility list will be certified by the Arlington Heights Board of Fire and Police Commissioners the week of October 5th, 2026.

ALL TEST RESULTS, PREFERENCE POINTS, AND REQUIRED DOCUMENTS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY 11:59 PM on October 4, 2026 for review and in order to earn your place on the Eligibility List. Any applicant not meeting the above deadline may be considered for future eligibility certification.

The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners reviews applications multiple times throughout the year.

Police Officer Requirements

  • Written Examination: Yes, required
  • LEO/CO Physical Ability Test (PAT): Yes, required as described below
    • POWER card required to be uploaded after your test. POWER test must have been completed within the last one year from the application deadline date.
  • PST Personal History Statement: Yes, required within 14 days of passing required exam(s)
  • Minimum Age: 21
  • Maximum Age: Applicants must be under 35 years of age, unless exempt from the age - 35 hiring requirement as permitted by 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1- 6(d), 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-6.3(c) and 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-14
  • Citizenship: Must be:
    • Legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law; and
    • Legally authorized under federal law to obtain, carry, or purchase or otherwise possess a firearm
  • High School Grad/ GED: Yes
  • Driver's License Required: Yes
  • Felony Conviction(s) as an Adult: Has not been convicted of a felony, or any misdemeanor that, in the judgment of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, renders the applicant unsuitable for the applied-for position.
  • Ability to Read, Speak & Write the English Language: Yes
  • Vision Requirements: Correctable to 20/20
  • College Requirement: Applicants for an entry-level police officer position must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent and an associate’s degree. In lieu of an associate’s degree, an applicant may:
    • possess credit for at least 60 hours toward a bachelor’s degree from an institution of higher learning accredited by the U.S. Department of Education; or
    • have served for 24 months of honorable active duty in the United States Armed Forces and not have been discharged dishonorably or under circumstances other than honorable; or
    • served for 180 days of active duty in the United States Armed Forces in combat duty recognized by the Department of Defense and has not been discharged dishonorably or under circumstances other than honorable.
  • Other Preference Points: Candidates who achieve a passing score on the written examination are eligible to claim preference points. A maximum of five (5) points may be claimed. Preference points offered shall not be cumulative. In cases of multiple preference point submissions by a single applicant, only the highest eligible preference points may be awarded. Preference points are offered in the following categories:
    • Military Experience: Those who were engaged in the active military or naval service of the United States for a period of at least one year and who were honorably discharged therefrom, or who are now or may hereafter be on inactive or reserve duty in such military or naval service - Five (5) points. (Please note, inactive/reserve duty status is in lieu of an honorable discharge, not active-duty time served.)
    • Law Enforcement Officer Experience: Applicants who have successfully been awarded a certificate attesting to the completion of the Minimum Standards Basic Law Enforcement Academy, are currently serving as an active full-time law enforcement officer and are otherwise ineligible for application under the Police Department’s Certified Entry Program. - Five (5) points.
    • AHPD Civilian Employee Experience: Applicants who are current Village of Arlington Heights Police Department full-time civilian employees in good standing and who have served no less than 12 months. - Four (4) points.
    • AHPD Internship and Apprenticeship Experience: Applicants that have successfully completed a Village of Arlington Heights Police Department sponsored internship or apprenticeship program, either in a part-time paid or college course credit capacity. - Three (3) points.
    • AHPD Volunteer: Applicants actively serving in a Police Department sponsored volunteer program for a period of at least 12 months in good standing. - Three (3) points.
    • Education: Applicants who have successfully obtained a bachelor’s degree from an institution of higher learning accredited by the U.S. Department of Education. - Two (2) points.
  • Other: Applicants must submit proof of passing the POWER test prior to be added to the eligibility list.
