Residential Specialist – Family Shelter (Midtown East)
We are seeking Residential Specialists to join our team at a family shelter in Brooklyn, NY
This role is essential in providing a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for families with children experiencing homelessness.
Available Shift:
- 3pm-11pm
Position Overview:
The Residential Specialist is responsible for ensuring the safety, well-being, and positive engagement of shelter residents. You will play a key role in promoting independence, providing compassionate support, and maintaining 24/7 coverage of the facility. This role requires sound judgment, empathy, integrity, and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct scheduled rounds to ensure resident safety and overall well-being.
- Maintain accurate activity logs, shift notes, and complete admissions paperwork.
- Escort residents to appointments, services, and activities as needed.
- Support and coordinate resident activities, including self-care programs and support groups.
- Assist case managers with assigned tasks and meet regularly for updates.
- Provide orientation for new residents and administrative support (phones, office coverage, food services).
- Assist with meal coordination and food distribution.
- Follow emergency protocols and participate in fire drills.
- Attend trainings and staff meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications:
- Experience working with diverse populations including individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use, mental health challenges, and other vulnerabilities.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to use trauma-informed, client-centered, and non-judgmental approaches.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in crisis situations.
