We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Project Accountant to join our client’s team in New Jersey. The position will be onsite, 5 days a week, until completion of the project, then will become hybrid!
This role is crucial for the financial success of their projects, ensuring accurate financial reporting, budget management, and compliance with regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting, with specific expertise in project accounting within the construction or engineering sectors.

Key Responsibilities:
Reports & Analysis:
- Prepare and present regular financial reports to stakeholders, offering insights into project progress and financial status. Utilize these reports to identify potential risks and develop strategies for improvement.
- Allocate and manage project budgets, ensuring alignment with financial goals and project requirements.
- Apply accounting standards and contractual terms to accurately recognize project revenue.
- Track and analyze project costs, identifying opportunities for cost savings and efficiency improvements.
- Develop financial forecasts using comprehensive economic data to guide decision-making and project planning.
Subcontractor Management & Compliance:
- Ensure that all projects comply with relevant laws and regulations, providing oversight and guidance to project teams.
- Assist in enforcing contract terms, ensuring that all parties meet their obligations.
- Review insurance and bond documentation to mitigate risks associated with under-insured subcontractors.
- Approve pay requests and schedules of value, ensuring all required documents are in place before payments are released.
Additional Accounting Responsibilities:
- Manage the invoicing process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in billing.
- Oversee accounts receivable, handling document releases, monthly billing, and payment status follow-ups.
- Ensure compliance with payroll requirements, reviewing forms, and payroll information, and collaborating with monitoring agencies.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in project accounting, preferably in construction, engineering, or a similar industry.
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, cost management, and compliance.
- Detailed job costing & cost codes, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, revenue recognition (percentage-of-completion), cash flow forecasting per project, and coordination with project managers
- Proficiency in Procore or similar project accounting software.
- Excellent attention to detail, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly and effectively.
