What are the responsibilities and job description for the Grant Writer (Future Staff Role – Volunteer to Hire) position at The Asylum Project?
The Asylum Project was created in response to a growing crisis for too many in the U.S., safety is no longer guaranteed. As systemic rollbacks target LGBTQ rights, racial justice, reproductive autonomy, and disability protections, we stand in defiance of the idea that survival should be a matter of luck or privilege.
We are a grassroots, volunteer-led nonprofit working to support those most at risk—especially queer, trans, BIPOC, and disabled individuals—by building pathways to safer futures abroad. Whether someone needs guidance, strategy, or simply to know they aren’t alone, we’re here to walk beside them.
We’re in the early stages of development, but our resolve is firm. We believe in community over cruelty, solidarity over silence, and building exits when systems become cages. The world is watching. We’re acting.
,
Location Remote (U.S.-based)
Commitment Full-time (pending funding)
Reports to Chief Financial Officer & Chief Operating Officer
Position Summary
The Grant Writer will play a pivotal role in securing sustainable funding for The Asylum Project’s programs and operations. Once funded, this position will lead the organization’s grant strategy—researching opportunities, drafting compelling proposals, and managing grant reporting to ensure transparency and impact alignment.
Note This position is currently a volunteer opportunity as The Asylum Project builds its funding base. Our goal is to transition this role into a paid staff position once funding allows. Volunteers serving in this capacity may be given first consideration when the paid position becomes available.
