About the Industry Program

 

ACEEE’s industry program delivers impactful research, market transformation, and advisory services to cut energy waste and emissions across the sector. The program’s work includes tracking state and federal industrial policies, providing technical assistance to support policy development, identifying technological advances, tracking carbon and energy outflow, and engaging with stakeholders. Our work often emphasizes how industrial energy efficiency and decarbonization impact communities, especially through benefits related to job creation, equity and environmental justice, and health.


Position Description


The research analyst will be a member of ACEEE’s industry program, providing a balance of research, analysis, outreach, and some administrative support to projects to scale up energy efficiency in the industrial sector. The research analyst will work with a well-respected and widely recognized team of policy and industry experts in a dynamic organization. The role includes collaboration with other ACEEE research programs, as well as policy experts working at the federal, state, utility, and local levels.

 

Responsibilities


Industrial research, analysis, and impact:

  • Performs research, analysis, and technical assistance for ACEEE's industrial program.
  • Research topics include electrification, industrial heat pumps, thermal energy storage, variable power, embodied carbon of construction materials, material efficiency, chemical defossilization, and policies that help lower technology adoption barriers.
  • Amplifies the impact of research findings in partnerships, publications and practical applications.
  • Identifies, monitors, and describes technological advances and deployment opportunities.
  • Tracks relevant policy developments at the state and federal levels.


Outreach to industrial, policy, and nonprofit partners:

  • Supports outreach to states for industrial energy efficiency programs, policy and rulemaking efforts.
  • Supports peer groups of utilities, industrial companies, NGOs, and other convening partners to help them advance energy efficiency and carbon reductions.
  • Supports industrial program projects with data collection, data entry, meeting logistics, and other strategic stakeholder engagement efforts through software applications like Salesforce and other tools.
  • Supports workshops and convenings (such as ACEEE’s Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Industry), including organizing logistics and production for virtual and in-person meetings as needed.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Competencies)

  • Highly analytical and attentive to detail. The analyst will conduct research dealing with complex quantitative and qualitative data; good spreadsheet analysis skills are essential.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills. The analyst will contribute to detailed research reports, white papers, fact sheets, and regulatory comments, and presentation materials including formal presentations, webinars, web pages, and blog posts.
  • Organizational and project coordination skills. The position requires skills in coordinating work on short-term as well as complex, long-term projects. The analyst should also be able to balance multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Strong social and interpersonal skills. The analyst will coordinate and collaborate with numerous ACEEE staff members on cross-cutting research projects as well as external colleagues and partners.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter. The analyst must show initiative and be able to work independently.
  • Tech-savvy and quick learner. The analyst will need to consult with other ACEEE staff to stay apprised of energy efficiency policies and programs and learn new technical skills on the job.


Job Requirements

 

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, public policy, physical or natural sciences with environmental, life sciences, architecture, economics also considered, and at least two years of relevant work experience or master’s degree and 1 year of relevant work experience.
  • Rigorous coursework in engineering, science, energy or public policy analysis, environmental science, economics, and/or mathematics.
  • Experience or strong interest in industrial decarbonization and/or industrial policy.


Strongly Preferred:

 

  • Experience with or sound knowledge of electrification strategies, energy efficiency, emissions reductions, embodied carbon in the built environment, and/or chemicals.
  • Demonstrated passion for clean energy, environmental issues, and/or engaging with state and local policymakers.

 

Preferred start date: January 2026, or as soon as a suitable candidate is found.


Location: Flexible. This position can be fully remote or based in ACEEE’s Washington DC office, on a full-time or hybrid basis.


Salary: $56,253 to $70,316, commensurate with experience. ACEEE’s generous benefits package includes health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance coverage; a 403(b) retirement plan; transportation and bike share benefits (if located in the DC-Maryland-Virginia area); 3 weeks of vacation in the first year and 4 weeks thereafter, 11 federal holidays and office-wide closure for the week between Christmas to New Year’s. This is a full-time, exempt position.
