The Herpetologist II position supports the mission of the Tennessee Aquarium to connect people with nature and empower them to make informed decisions about water and wildlife. The level II Herpetologist participates in the husbandry of reptiles (including venomous snakes) and amphibian specimens. Responsibilities also include a working knowledge of a horticultural program.

Key Responsibilities
1. Performs daily maintenance and care of specimens, exhibits, and off-exhibit holding and quarantine areas. Maintains and monitors reptile egg incubation and rearing equipment and procedures. Assesses daily the status and condition of all specimens, exhibits, and backup areas within the area of responsibility.
2. Observes all specimens to detect health problems, behavioral interactions, reproductive behavior, etc. Assists veterinarian in reptile and amphibian health procedures. Captures and restrains specimens for behavioral or health reasons, during major work on exhibits, or for routine procedures such as weighing and measuring, marking, etc.
3. Submits daily reports on ZIMS for reptile and amphibian areas that may include feeding, medical procedures, environmental parameters, incubation data, and specimen weights and measurements. Maintains correspondence with other professionals in the field. Keeps abreast with current literature related to area of responsibility.
4. Conducts new and background research on diet, behavior, life history, and exhibit needs of reptiles and amphibians in captivity.
5. Assists in the identification of available specimens from other facilities, preparation, and shipping, receiving specimens. Maintains the inventory of supplies and equipment used in the area of responsibility.
6. Conduct programs for the guests. Also interacts with guests on a less formal level, answering questions from visitors or callers. Assists with training and supervision of Forest section interns and volunteers
7. Performs work in a manner that fosters the Aquarium’s mission and reflects its core values and service standards
8. Participates in cross-functional activities like conducting tours, educational programs, etc., for the public, members, media, education staff, docents, etc.

Key Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in herpetology, biology, or a related field, or the equivalent to a degree in experience
• Minimum of three years’ experience in a related field
• Employed a minimum of three years at the herpetologist I level at an AZA-accredited institution or equivalent non-AZA institution.
• Demonstrated expertise in a biological grouping or some similar specialty related to the position
• Endorsement by both the immediate supervisors
• Performs work as a team player and provides a positive leadership role for peers, colleagues, interns, and volunteers
• Demonstrated ability to engage in public speaking, such as daily programs, educational programs, members programs, etc.
• Experience in breeding, daily, and medical care of amphibians.
• Experience with handling and care of venomous and nonvenomous snakes
• Experience with the daily and medical care of chelonians.
• Experience with the daily care of plants
• Valid driver’s license required to operate Aquarium vehicles

Working Conditions and Physical Demands
• Work is performed in a variety of environments, including office, outdoor, and aquatic settings, with exposure to varying weather conditions, wet and slippery surfaces, strong odors, and potentially hazardous animals.
• This role involves a range of physical activity, including moving equipment, working in confined or restricted spaces requiring varied positioning, and navigating ladders and stairs, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Full-time, hourly ($21.00/hour); Set schedule: Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Some holiday work is required.
