Desktop Support Technician – Telecom (POTS Discovery)

Role Description
The Desktop Support Technician – Telecom is responsible for onsite discovery, validation, and documentation of Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) lines across designated locations. This role supports infrastructure and telecom transformation initiatives by ensuring accurate identification of legacy telephony services and their dependencies.
The position requires close coordination with local site contacts, facilities teams, and infrastructure stakeholders. The technician will perform hands-on inspections of telecom termination points, validate connected devices and services, and maintain detailed records to support transition planning and risk mitigation.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform onsite discovery and physical inspection of POTS lines across assigned locations
- Coordinate with local site contacts and facility management to gain site and telecom room access
- Identify, label, and validate POTS circuits, demarcation points, punch-down blocks, and termination panels
- Document line details including circuit IDs, usage, connected devices, and service providers
- Verify and confirm critical business devices dependent on POTS connectivity (e.g., fire alarms, elevators, security systems, fax machines, modems)
- Validate service status (active, inactive, unknown) and escalate discrepancies
- Maintain accurate documentation using predefined templates and asset management tools
- Provide daily/weekly status updates and support audit or transition reports
- Follow site safety, compliance, and change management procedures
- Collaborate with telecom, infrastructure, and service management teams to support decommissioning or migration efforts
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong experience in Desktop Management and Infrastructure Services (IS)
- Working knowledge of telecom fundamentals, especially POTS and legacy telephony
- Experience with onsite infrastructure discovery and asset validation
- Ability to read and interpret telecom labeling, floor plans, and circuit information
- Hands-on experience with MDF/IDF environments and basic telecom tools
- Strong documentation and reporting skills
- Effective communication and coordination with onsite and remote teams
- Attention to detail and troubleshooting mindset
Experience Requirements
- 6–8 years of experience in Desktop Support, Infrastructure Services, or Telecom Support roles
- Prior experience in telecom discovery, POTS audits, or infrastructure transformation projects is highly preferred
