Description
Performs two-dimensional ultrasonic recordings of internal organs for diagnosis of disease and study of the malfunction of organs. Participates in CQI activities.
Demonstrates Competency in the following areas
- Selects appropriate equipment for use in ultrasound setup, following exam specifications.
- Explains the test to the patient. Instructs and assists the patient in assuming the physical position for examination.
- Able to assess patient pain interfering with imaging procedure – makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical / health care errors.
- Selects a transducer and adjusts the equipment controls according to the organ to be examined, the depth of the field, and other specifications of the test.
- Enters test data and patient information into the computer of ultrasound equipment to maintain a record of test results.
- Moves transducer, by hand, over specified area of the body and observes sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced.
- Produces images of internal organs and records digital diagnostic data on a computer to send to EMR.
- Documents and obtains a permanent record of internal examination digitally.
- Performs all quality control checks, as prescribed.
- Maintains accurate QC logs, service records, etc.
- Understands and practices proper use of all equipment; never operates equipment inconsistently with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Knows hospital policies and the functions of other departments.
- Provides care appropriate to the condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric, and general populations.
- Works shifts as scheduled or arranges appropriate trade, takes call when needed.
- Keeps busy during slower times by cleaning, purging projects, and helping others.
- Positive attitude with all patients and other staff at all times.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Regulatory Requirements
- Graduation from an AMA-approved school of Ultrasound, Bachelor of Science preferred.
- One year of Ultrasound / Imaging experience, preferably with specific experience and training in Ultrasound.
- RDMS certification must be obtained within 18 months of hire.
- Knowledge and understanding of general anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
- Current CPR certification.
