Overview
A leading independent Registered Investment Advisor is seeking a Director of Portfolio Management to build and lead a centralized portfolio management function within the firm. This individual will design and implement the firm’s portfolio management infrastructure from the ground up while helping shape the organization’s investment philosophy, model portfolios, and trade execution processes. The Director will work closely with the Investment Committee, advisors, and executive leadership to oversee portfolio construction, drift management, firm-wide rebalancing, and portfolio execution.
Key Responsibilities
Build & Lead Portfolio Management Function
• Design and implement the firm’s centralized portfolio management infrastructure and processes
• Establish scalable systems for portfolio monitoring, rebalancing, and execution
• Develop policies and procedures governing model management, trading, and portfolio oversight
• Recruit, train, and mentor team members as the portfolio management function grows
Portfolio Oversight & Drift Management
• Develop and maintain firm-approved investment strategies and model portfolios
• Establish firm-wide standards for acceptable portfolio drift
• Monitor client portfolios relative to models, objectives, and risk profiles
• Direct portfolio realignments when thresholds are exceeded while incorporating tax efficiency, client-specific constraints, and market conditions
• Ensure investment actions are consistent, timely, and well documented
Investment Strategy & Investment Committee Participation
• Serve as an active member of the firm’s Investment Committee
• Contribute to asset allocation frameworks, model design, and investment strategy selection
• Evaluate investment managers, strategies, and products
• Review portfolio performance, risk exposure, and outcomes on an ongoing basis
• Recommend enhancements to the firm’s model portfolios and investment framework
Firm-Wide Rebalancing & Trade Execution
• Oversee and execute firm-wide portfolio rebalancing activities
• Establish rebalancing cadence, triggers, and execution protocols
• Work closely with operations and advisors to ensure efficient and accurate trade execution
• Train advisors and internal stakeholders on portfolio implementation and trading best practices
• Reduce advisor-level variability by centralizing portfolio execution
Client-Level Cash Management
• Monitor client-level cash balances across portfolios
• Determine when excess cash should be deployed or when liquidity should be increased
• Coordinate decisions with advisors to ensure alignment with financial plans and client objectives
• Ensure cash positioning is intentional and aligned with portfolio strategy
Technology & Trading Infrastructure
• Evaluate and implement best-in-class portfolio management and trading technologies
• Optimize systems for portfolio monitoring, drift detection, tax-aware rebalancing, and reporting
• Experience with GeoWealth or Orion Eclipse trading platforms is highly desirable
• Partner with leadership to leverage technology that improves scalability and efficiency
Advisor & Client Communication
• Serve as a visible investment leader within the firm
• Support and lead advisors in client conversations regarding portfolio strategy and market conditions
• Provide clear communication regarding portfolio positioning and investment decisions
• Contribute to internal investment updates and market commentary
Documentation, Compliance & Governance
• Maintain all investment-related documentation including the firm’s investment philosophy, model construction frameworks, drift management policies, and rebalancing procedures
• Partner with compliance and legal teams to ensure regulatory alignment and audit readiness
Qualifications
Required:
• CFA designation
• 7 years of progressive investment management experience
• Strong expertise in portfolio construction, drift management, tax-aware investing, and risk management
• Demonstrated experience managing model portfolios and firm-level investment processes
• Strong ability to leverage technology to improve portfolio management workflows
• Ability to communicate complex investment topics to advisors and clients
• Strong cultural fit with a collaborative, client-focused organization
Preferred:
• Experience with GeoWealth, Orion Eclipse, or similar portfolio trading platforms
• Experience building or scaling a centralized portfolio management function
• Prior participation in an Investment Committee environment
