Chief Physicist

Job Description

Our client, a leading healthcare provider known for its commitment to patient safety and innovative medical services, is hiring a Chief Physicist. The Chief Physicist plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safe and effective use of radiation across the hospital system. This leadership position requires expert knowledge of medical physics, regulatory compliance, and radiation safety management. The successful candidate will oversee radiology and nuclear medicine physics services, develop quality assurance programs, and coordinate technological advancements to improve patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and strategic oversight for the physics section and medical physics services.
• Serve as the primary resource for radiation safety and regulatory compliance across the hospital system.
• Design, implement, and maintain quality assurance programs aligned with state and federal regulations, including NRC and ACR standards.
• Plan, evaluate, and budget for emerging technology to ensure continuous enhancement of clinical services.
• Lead the acquisition, installation, and acceptance testing of ionizing radiation equipment, including room design and shielding in compliance with regulatory standards.
• Ensure calibration, maintenance, and acceptance testing of radiology and nuclear imaging equipment.
• Interface with certifying and regulatory bodies regarding compliance documentation and inspections.
• Measure and assess radiation doses to optimize exam quality while minimizing exposure (ALARA principle).
• Collaborate with medical and clinical leadership to review and develop procedures aimed at improving quality of care.
• Support radiation safety education programs for staff and patients, addressing radiation exposure concerns when appropriate.
• Serve as Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), conducting quarterly and annual reviews, oversight of radiation safety programs, and ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations.
• Oversee equipment surveys, certification testing, dosimeter management, and radiation exposure monitoring.
• Lead or support licensing activities, including license applications, renewals, and amendments.
• Participate in Radiation Safety Committee meetings and contribute to hospital-wide safety initiatives.
• Develop and implement radiation safety training programs for healthcare professionals and students.
• Investigate unusual radiation exposure incidents and recommend corrective actions to administration.
  
  

Requirements

• Minimum of a Master’s degree or higher in Medical Physics, Health Physics, or a related field.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in medical physics, with significant leadership and radiation safety responsibilities.
• Certification as a Qualified Medical Physicist (ABR or equivalent) preferred.
• Demonstrated expertise in radiation safety, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.
• Strong knowledge of radiation equipment, including MRI, CT, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, and Mammography systems.
• Experience in managing radiation safety programs and serving as a Radiation Safety Officer.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of addressing patient and staff concerns comprehensively.
• Ability to participate in regulatory filings and manage licensing processes.
• Willingness to participate in on-call duties and hospital safety committees. Additional desirable qualifications include familiarity with hospital accreditation standards and experience with staff education programs on radiation safety.
