Job Description

COU 750 – Practicum in Counseling (3 Credits)

May 18th – August 7th, 2026

Description

A one-semester, 100-hour, clinical placement to advance the student’s counseling skills. Video or audio taping at the practicum site is required for supervision. Students receive weekly individual and group supervision on campus.

Repeatable 2 times for 6 credits maximum

Advisory recommendation Prereq: COU 624 and 644

Qualifications

  • Doctorate (or ABD) in counselor education is required.
  • Practicum is a supervised field placement in a school, agency, college, or rehabilitation setting during which clinical mental health counseling students assume the varied role of counselor.
  • Qualified applicants should have experience working with varied clinical populations and be familiar with providing clinical supervision in a group format.

Job Specific Qualifications

  • Licensure or certification as a professional counselor is preferred.
  • Demonstrated effective teaching and supervisory practices that can be applied to a clinical internship course.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
  • Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
  • Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
  • Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute. You must also notify the department chair of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.
  • Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
  • Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
  • Participate in student recitals or showings.
  • Collect and submit student assessment data for accreditation purposes, if applicable.
  • Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
  • Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
  • Providing an updated CV annually or upon request of the department or school.
  • Participating in departmental meetings or workshops.
  • Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
